WHAT BUSPAR IS USED FOR _ _ Buspar is an anxiolytic, a medicine used to treat anxiety over short periods of time. The way it works is unknown. It does not relax muscles or cause drowsiness in most patients. ASK YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT WHY BUSPAR HAS BEEN PRESCRIBED FOR YOU. Your doctor may have prescribed it for another purpose. There is no evidence that Buspar is addictive. This medicine is only available with a doctor’s prescription. Buspar is not recommended for use in children under the age of 18, as there have not been enough studies of its effects in children. BUSPAR – Product Information Page 1 of 12 BUSPAR (buspirone hydrochloride) Tablets 5 mg & 10 mg PRODUCT INFORMATION NAME OF THE MEDICINE BUSPAR contains buspirone hydrochloride and chemically is 8-[4-[4-(2-pyrimidinyl)-1-piperazinyl]butyl]-8-azaspiro[4.5]decane-7,9-dione monohydrochloride. The chemical structure is CAS No. 33386-08-2 DESCRIPTION BUSPAR (buspirone hydrochloride) is an antianxiety agent that is not chemically or pharmacologically related to the benzodiazepines but has some resemblance to drugs which interact with dopamine receptors. Buspirone hydrochloride is a white, crystalline, water soluble compound with a molecular weight of 422.0. The tablets consist of the active drug in lactose anhydrous, sodium starch glycollate, microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal silicon dioxide and magnesium stearate. PHARMACOLOGY PHARMACODYNAMICS Buspirone hydrochloride belongs chemically to the class of pharmacologic agents with selective anxiolytic psychotropic activity known as the azapirones. The mechanism of action of buspirone is unknown. In contrast to the benzodiazepines, and other anxiolytic agents, buspirone does not exert anticonvulsant or muscle relaxant effects. It also lacks the prominent sedative effect that is associated with more typical anxiolytics. _In _ _vitro_ preclinical studies have shown that buspirone has a high affinity for serotonin (5-HT 1A ) receptors. Buspirone has no significant affinity for benzodiazepine receptors and does not affect GABA binding _in vitro_ or _in vivo_ when tested in preclinical models.
