Serial Number WHAT PAIN RELIEF CREAM IS USED FOR Temporary pain relief for neck, shoulder aches, stressed, tired and stiff muscles. HOW PAIN RELIEF CREAM WORKS It contains methyl salicylate and menthol. Menthol_ _dilates the blood vessels causing a sensation of coldness, followed by an analgesic effect. Menthol also acts as a penetration enhancer, increasing the penetration of drugs when applied on the skin, to give a faster onset of action. Methyl salicylate is used topically as a counter irritant. Upon application, it is absorbed through the skin and is applied for the relief of rheumatic pain and muscle or joints pain. BEFORE YOU USE PAIN RELIEF CREAM - _When you must not use it_ Do not use in patients with aspirin or salicylate idiosyncrasy. Do not use it if you are allergic to any ingredients of this Pain Relief Cream. - _Before you start to use it_ Initially apply a small amount to a limited skin area and observe whether there is discomfort or itch before applying to a larger skin area. Discontinue use if irritation develops._ _ Please follow the advice of the doctor or pharmacist. - _Taking other medicines _ Please inform the doctor or pharmacist if taking other medicines. For patients taking warfarin, excessive application on to the skin for muscle or joint pains may increase the chances of bleeding. MK ESSENTIA HEALTHCARE SERIES PAIN RELIEF CREAM ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Menthol 6%w/w, Methyl Salicylate 13%w/w PRESERVATIVE: Chlorocresol 0.2%w/w PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: White colour, smooth application, sticky and characteristic odor cream. INDICATION: For the symptomatic relief of muscular aches and pains, and stiffness including backache, lumbago and fibrositis. DIRECTION OF USE: Gently massage a sufficient amount of the cream onto affected area. Not recommended for children below 12 years old. ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION: Topical PHARMACODYNAMICS _Menthol_ Menthol dilates the blood vessels causing a sensation of coldness, followed by an analgesic effect. Salicylates inhibit cyclooxygenase, thereby reducing the formation of prostaglan- dins and cause platelet dysfunction. Methyl salicylate is used topically as a counter irritant. Upon application, it is absorbed through the skin and is applied for the relief of the pain in rheumatic conditions and painful muscle or joints. PHARMACOKINETICS _Menthol_ After absorption, menthol is excreted in the urine and bile as a glucuronide. _Methyl Salicylate_ May be absorbed through intact skin. The absorption of topical salicylates is proportional to the surface area involved, duration of exposure, concentration and skin integrity. Absorption characteristics of salicylates vary with the dose, formulation and route of administration. Percutaneous absorption is enhanced by exercise, heat, occlusion or disruption of the integrity of the skin or application to large areas of skin. Both the rate and extent of absorption increases after repeated application; increasing the bioavailability. Methyl salicylate is extensively metabolised to salicylic acid in the dermal and subcutaneous tissues after topical application.
