WHAT HEPARINISED 
SALINE INJECTION IS 
USED FOR 
Heparinised Saline Injection belongs 
to a group of medicines known as 
anticoagulants.  Anticoagulants work 
by decreasing the clotting ability of 
your blood and help stop clots 
forming in the blood vessels.  
Anticoagulants are sometimes called 
"blood thinners", although they do 
not actually thin the blood.  Heparin 
will not dissolve blood clots that 
have already formed, but it may 
prevent any clots that have already 
formed from becoming larger and 
causing serious problems. 
Heparinised Saline Injection is used 
to prevent the blocking of injection 
equipment often caused by blood 
clots. 
Heparinised Saline Injection may be 
used for the treatment of other 
conditions that are not mentioned

HEPARINISED SALINE INJECTION (PORCINE MUCOUS) 
NAME OF THE MEDICINE 
Heparin sodium BP  
Heparin  is  a  heterogeneous  group  of  straight-chain  anionic  mucopolysaccharides,  called 
glycosaminoglycans,  possessing  anticoagulant  properties.  It  is  composed  of  polymers  of 
alternating  derivations  of  α-D-glucosamido  (_N_-sulfated  _O_-sulfated  or  _N_-acetylated)  and  _O_-
sulfated uronic acid (α-L-iduronic acid or β-D-glucuronic acid).

DESCRIPTION

Heparin sodium is a preparation containing the sodium salt of a sulphated
glucosaminoglycan 
present  in  mammalian  tissues.    It  is  prepared  from  the  intestinal  mucosae  of  pigs.    Heparin 
sodium is a white or almost white powder, moderately hygroscopic,
freely soluble in water. 
Heparinised  Saline  Injection  is  a  clear,  colourless,  sterile,  preservative-free  solution 
containing  Heparin  Sodium  BP  (porcine  mucous)  and  Sodium  Chloride  BP  in  Water  for 
Injections BP. 
PHARMACOLOGY 
CLASS OF DRUG: ANTICOAGULANT 
MECHANISM OF ACTION: 
Heparin is a naturally occurring mucopolysaccharide with _in vitro_ and _in vivo_ anticoagulant 
activity.  Heparin acts at multiple sites in the normal coagulation systems.  Small amounts of 
heparin  in  combination  with  antithrombin  III  (heparin  cofactor)  can  inhibit  thrombosis  by 
inactivating  activated  factor  X  and  inhibiting  the  conversion  of  prothrombin  to  thrombin.

Once  active  thrombosis  has  developed,  larger  amounts  of  heparin  can  inhibit  further 
coagulation by inactivating thrombin, which in turn prevents the conversion of fibrino
