DESCRIPTION
White, opaque cream.
COMPOSITION
Neomycin Sulphate
0.5% w/w
PHARMACODYNAMICS AND
PHARMACOKINETICS
Neomycin,
a
bactericidal
antibiotic,
is
actively
transported
across the bacterial cell membrane, binds to 30S subunit of
bacterial ribosomes, and interferes with an initiation complex
between messenger RNA and the 30S subunit, thus inhibiting
protein synthesis.
Neomycin
is
not
absorbed
percutaneously,
but
is
readily
absorbed from large denuded, burned or granulating areas.
INDICATIONS
For treatment of infections of the skin due to susceptible
staphylococci and other neomycin-sensitive organisms.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
•
Avoid
in
patients
known
to
be
hypersensitive
to
aminoglycosides.
•
Prolonged use is not recommended as it may lead to skin
sensitisation.
•
Do not use on deep or punctured wounds, serious burns, or
raw areas unless directed by physician.
•
Concurrent topical and systemic administration of neomycin
or related drugs is not recommended since hypersensitivity
reactions
may
occur
more
frequently
under
these
circumstances.
•
This medication is not for ophthalmic use.
PRECAUTIONS
Caution in patients with extensive skin damage or perforated
tympanic membranes as deafness may result.
PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
Safety
for
use
in
pregnancy
and
lactation
has
not
been
established.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Concurrent topical use of other aminoglycosides with neomycin
or related drugs is not recommended since hypersensitivity
reactions may occur more frequently.
MAIN SIDE/ADVERSE EFFECTS
Hypersensitivity reactions, usually of the delayed type.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
Route of administration:
Topical
Adults and Children:
Apply to the affected area one to three times a day.
Note: The treated area(s) may be covered with a gauze
dressing if desired.
