Date of revision WHAT DIDANOSINE IS USED FOR Didanosine is used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs for the treatment of HIV infected patients. HOW DIDANOSINE WORKS Didanosine belongs to a group of medicines called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). It is normally used in combination with other anti-HIV medicines. Didanosine is not a cure for HIV infection. You may continue to develop infections or other illnesses linked to HIV infection. You must continue to take appropriate precautions to avoid infecting HIV to others . BEFORE YOU USE DIDANOSINE - _When you must not use it_ _ _ _ _ Do not take Didanosine - if you are allergic to Didanosine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine - if you are a child younger 6 years old _PREGNANCY AND LACTATION _ There are no adequate data from the use of didanosine in pregnant women and it is not known whether didanosine can cause foetal harm or affect reproductive capacity when administered during pregnancy. Lactic acidosis, sometimes fatal, has been reported in pregnant women who received the combination of didanosine and stavudine with or without other antiretroviral treatment. Therefore, the use of didanosine during pregnancy should be considered only if clearly indicated, and only when the potential benefit outweighs the possible risk. It is not known whether Didanosine is excreted in human milk. It is recommended that women taking Didanosine do not breast-feed because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants.
