WHAT SALOFALK ® 500MG GASTRO-RESISTANT TABLETS ARE AND WHAT THEY ARE USED FOR Salofalk ® 500mg contains the active substance mesalazine, an anti-inflammatory agent used to treat inflammatory bowel disease. Salofalk ® 500mg is used in: - ulcerative colitis (chronic inflammatory disease of the colon), both for the treatment of acute episodes and prevention of further episodes (relapse) - Crohn’s disease (a chronic inflammatory bowel disease), for the treatment of acute episodes. 2. QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE COMPOSITION _ _ 1 Salofalk 500mg gastro-resistant tablet contains 500 mg mesalazine as the therapeutically active substance. Excipients: sodium carbonate and croscarmellose sodium For a full list of excipients, see section 6.1. 3. PHARMACEUTICAL FORM Gastro-resistant tablets Appearance: oval, light yellow to ochre-coloured gastro-resistant tablets, matt with smooth surface; not scored. 4. CLINICAL PARTICULARS 4.1 THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS • Ulcerative colitis: treatment of acute episodes and to prevent a relapse • Crohn’s disease: treatment of acute episodes 4.2 POSOLOGY AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION Adults and the elderly: Depending upon the clinical requirements in individual cases, the following daily doses are recommended: Page 2 of 10 _CROHN’S DISEASE _ _ULCERATIVE COLITIS _ Acute episode Acute episode Relapse prophylaxis/ Maintenance treatement Mesalazine (active substance) 1.5 g – 4.5 g 1.5 g – 3.0 g 1.5 g Salofalk ® 500mg gastro- resistant tablets 3 x 1 to 3 x 3 3 x 1 to 3 x 2 3 x 1 Children: In children (6-18 years), there is only limited proof with regard to efficacy. Acute episodes: After a starting dose of 30-50 mg/kg body weight/day, administered in separate doses, the dose must be individually adjusted. Maximum dose: 75 mg/kg body weight/day.
