ACTION
_In vitro_ tests demonstrate that the bactericidal action of
cefuroxime results from the
inhibition of the transpeptidase and carboxypeptidase enzymes, thus
inhibiting cell
wall synthesis.
INDICATIONS
KEFUROX (cefuroxime) may be indicated for the treatment of patients
with infections
caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms in the
following
diseases:
LOWER RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTIONS: Pneumonia caused by_ Streptococcus
_
_pneumoniae_. _Haemophilus influenzae_ including ampicillin-resistant
strains, _Klebsiella_
species, _Staphylococcus aureus_ (penicillinase- and non-penicillinase
producing)
including ampicillin-resistant (but not methicillin-resistant)
strains. _Streptococcus _
_pyogenes_ and _Escherichia coli_.
URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS: Caused by _Escherichia coli_ and
_Klebsiella_ species.
SOFT TISSUE INFECTIONS: Caused by _Staphylococcus aureus_
(penicillinase- and non-
penicillinase producing) including ampicillin-resistant (but not
methicillin-resistant)
strains. _Streptococcus pyogenes_, _Escherichia coli _and_ Klebsiella_
species.
GONORRHEA: Caused by _Neisseria gonorrhea_ (penicillinase- and
non-penicillinase
producing strains) including ampicillin-resistant strains.
MENINGITIS: Caused by _Staphylococcus aureus_ (penicillinase- and
non-penicillinase
producing) including ampicillin-resistant (but not
methicillin-resistant) strains,
