Serial Number WHAT SUNEX COUGH SYRUP IS USED FOR It is used as an expectorant for control of cough due to cold or allergy. HOW SUNEX COUGH SYRUP WORKS The active ingredients in the medicine are Diphenhydramine hydrochloride, Ammo- nium chloride and Sodium citrate. Diphenhy- dramine is an ethanolamine-derivative anti- histamine. It shares the action and uses of other antihistamines which work by block- ing a certain natural substance (histamine) that your body makes during an allergic reac- tion. It is also used as an antitussive (to suppress cough) for temporary relief of cough caused by minor throat and bronchial irrita- tion such as may occur with common colds or inhaled irritants. Ammonium chloride may act as an expecto- rant which works by irritating gastric mucosa to increase secretion of mucus making it less viscous and easier to expel. Sodium citrate is used as a source of bicarbonate when employed as alkalinizing agent. USE IN PREGNANCY AND LACTATION: There is no adequate and controlled studies to date for the use of diphenhydramine maleate in pregnant and nursing mother. Hence the drug should be used in these situation only when clearly needed. including asthma. Anti-histamines are also contraindicated in the following conditions: Hypersensitivity to diphenhydramines of similar chemical structure.Monoamine oxidase inhibitor therapy. SIDE EFFECTS/ADVERSE REACTIONS: The adverse reactions reported are: 1) General: Urticaria, drug rash, anaphylactic shock, photosensitivity, excessive perspiration, chills, dryness of mouth, nose and throat. 2) Cardiovascular system: Hypotension, headache, palpitations, tachycardia, extrasystoles. 3) Hematologic system: Hemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis. 4) Nervous system: Sedation, sleepiness dizziness, disturbed co-ordination, fatigue, confusion, restlessness, excitation, nervousness, tremor, irritability, insomnia, euphoria, paresthesia, blurred vision, diplopia, vertigo,tinnitus, acute labyrinthitis, hysteria, neuritis, convulsion. 5) G.I. systems: Epigastric distress, anorexia nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation. 6) G.U. system: Urinary frequency, difficult urination, urinary retention, early menses. 7) Respiratory system: Thickening of bronchial secretions, tightness of chest and wheezing, nasal stuffiness. also occur. If vomiting has not occurred spontaneously, the patient should be induced to vomit.
