WHAT IS FENFEDRIN USED FOR
It
is
used
to

in
common colds and help clear airway.
It provides temporary relief to runny nose,
sneezing and itching of
nose caused by
allergic
rhinitis
(inflammation
of
the
mucous membrane inside the nose) such as
hay fever.
HOW FENFEDRIN WORKS
Pseudoephedrine
is
a
decongestant.
It
works by narrowing the blood vessels in
the
nose
to
decrease
swelling
and
congestion.
Chlorpheniramine Maleate helps to reduce
secretion
in
the
nose
by
blocking
histamine, a natural substance produced in
the body during allergic reactions.

Pharmacodynamics
Chlorpheniramine Maleate belongs to the alkylamine antihistamines,
which are among the most active H1-blockers and are generally
effective in
relatively low doses. It is used to reduce rhinorrhoea and sneezing.
Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic agent with direct and indirect
effects on adrenergic receptors. It is said to have less pressor
activity and
CNS effects than ephedrine of which it is a stereoisomer.
Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride is used as a nasal and bronchial
decongestant.
Both active ingredients are readily absorbed from the
gastro-intestinal tract.
Pseudoephedrine is resistant to metabolism by monoamine oxidase and up
to about 90% of a dose in 24 hours is largely excreted unchanged
in the urine. Less than 1% is excreted as nor-pseudoephedrine which is
pH dependent. The half-life of several hours is reduced in acid urine.
Chlorpheniramine
is
extensively
metabolised
to
polar
and
non-polar
metabolites.
The
excretion
of
the
unchanged
drug
is
increased
by
acidification of the urine and increased flow of urine. After daily
oral administration the forms excreted are about 20% unchanged drug,
20% as
monodesmethylchlorpheniramine, 5% as didesmethylchlorpheniramine. Less
than 1% is excreted through the faeces.
