WHAT ACTIHIST EXPECTORANT IS USED FOR

To
relieve
irritating
dry
cough,
runny nose and nasal congestion.
HOW ACTIHIST EXPECTORANT WORKS
This
medicine
contains
three
active
ingredients:
Pseudoephedrine HCl, a decongestant to
relieves nasal congestion.
Triprolidine
HCl,
antihistamine
that
helps to stop sneezing, runny nose.
Guaiphenesin,
helps
in
loosening
the
mucus in throat and chest.

DESCRIPTION
Orange, transparent liquid with fresh mint flavour.
COMPOSITION
Each 5 ml contains:
Triprolidine Hydrochloride
1.25 mg
Pseudoephedrine Hydrochloride
30.00 mg
Guaiphenesin
100.00 mg
ACTIONS AND PHARMACOLOGY
Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic agent. It acts on
alpha-adrenergic receptors in the mucosa of the respiratory tract,
producing
vasoconstriction.
Triprolidine is an antihistamine. It is an antagonist of the H-1
receptor effects of histamine. It acts by competing with histamine for
H-1
receptor sites on effector cells. It diminishes or abolishes most of
the actions of histamine mediated by the H-1 receptors. The action
of histamine most readily affected is that on the involuntary muscle
of the intestine, bladder, uterus and bronchioles.
Guaiphenesin is said to reduce the viscosity of tenacious sputum.
This medication is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, is
metabolised in the liver and undergoes renal excretion.
INDICATIONS
This medication is used to relieve irritating unproductive cough,
congestion of the upper respiratory tract associated with common
cold and to aid the clearance of mucous from the lower respiratory
tract.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
This medication should not be given to premature infants or neonates,
patients undergoing anaesthesia with cyclopropane, halothane
or other halogenated anaesthetics and patients with hyperthyroidism,
cardiovascular disease or acute attacks of asthma. It should not
be used concurrently with monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
PRECAUTIONS
•
This medication should be used with caution in hypersensitive patients
and in geriatrics. It should be carefully considered when
the following medical problems exist: diabetes mellitus, closed-angle
glaucoma, hypertension, peptic ulcer and renal function
impairment.
•
Caution in patients with hyperthyroidism and prostatic enlargement.
•
Safety for use in pregnancy and lactation has not been established.
•
Not to be used in children less than 2 years of age.
