WHAT CIPROXIN IS
USED FOR
Ciproxin tablets are used for the
treatment of infections of the lungs,
skin, bones, joints, kidneys, bladder,
prostate and bowel. Ciproxin is also
used to treat inhalational anthrax
(an infection caused by breathing in
the spores of bacteria).
Ciproxin tablets contain the active
ingredient, CIPROFLOXACIN, which is
an antibiotic belonging to a group of
medicines called quinolones
(pronounced kwin-o-lones). These
antibiotics work by killing the
bacteria that are causing your
infection.
Ciproxin will not work against
infections caused by viruses such as
colds or the flu.

(Ciprofloxacin)
NAME OF THE MEDICINE
Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride is a synthetic carboxyquinolone derivative with broad spectrum
antimicrobial activity. It is the monohydrochloride monohydrate salt of 1-cyclopropyl-6-fluoro-
1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-7-(1-piperazinyl)-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid. The CAS Registry number is
[86393-32-0]. It is a faintly yellowish to yellow crystalline substance with a molecular weight of
385.8. Its empirical formula is C17H18FN3O3.HCl.H2O and its chemical structure is as
follows:
DESCRIPTION
Ciproxin is available as 250 mg, 500 mg and 750 mg film-coated tablets for oral
administration. Ciproxin tablets also contain the following excipients: microcrystalline
cellulose, maize starch, colloidal anhydrous silica, crospovidone, magnesium stearate,
hypromellose, macrogol 4000, titanium dioxide.
PHARMACOLOGYPHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIONS (MICROBIOLOGY)
Ciprofloxacin has _in vitro_ activity against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive
organisms. The bactericidal action of ciprofloxacin appears to result from interference with
the enzyme, DNA gyrase. Ciprofloxacin is usually active against the following organisms _ in _
_vitro_.
Gram-Negative:
_Escherichia coli_; _Klebsiella _species (including _Klebsiella_ _pneumoniae_ and _Klebsiella _
_oxytoca_); _Enterobacter_ species; _Citrobacter_ species; _Salmonella_ species; _Shigella_
species; _Proteus_ _mirabilis_; _Proteus vulgaris_; _Providencia stuartii_; _Providencia rettgeri_
(formerly _Proteus rettgeri_); _Morganella morganii_ (forme
