A transient metabolite of vitamin K is thought responsible for activation of clotting factors, following which the metabolite is converted to vitamin K epoxide. The cycle is completed by the enzyme vitamin K reductase. Anticoagulant rodenticides compete with vitamin K epoxide for the receptor site on vitamin K reductase, preventing vitamin K regeneration.
