CLINICAL PARTICULARS
4.1 THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS
Cefazolin is indicated for the treatment of infections due to
susceptible
organisms and also perioperatively for prophylaxis.
TREATMENT INCLUDES:
_Respiratory tract infections_ due to _streptococcus pneumoniae_
(formerly
_Diplococcus pneumoniae_), _Klebsiella_ species, _Haemophilus
influenza_,
_staphylococcus aureus_ (penicillin-sensitive and
penicillin-resistant)
group A beta-haemolytic streptococci, streptococci of the nasopharynx.
_Urinary tract infections_ due to _Escherichia coli_, _Klebsiella
species_, _Proteus _
_mirabilis_ and some strains of _Enterobacter_ and enterococci.
_skin and skin structure infections_ due to _staphylococcus aureus_
(penicillin-
sensitive and penicillin-resistant), group A beta-haemolytic
streptococci
and other strains of streptococci.
_Biliary tract infections_ due to _Escherichia coli_, various strains
of streptococci,
_Proteus mirabilis_, _Klebsiella_ species and _staphylococcus aureus_.
_Bone and joint infections_ due to _staphylococcus aureus_.
_Genital infections _due to _Escherichia coli_, _Proteus mirabilis_,
_Klebsiella_
species and some strains of streptococci.
_septicemia_ due to _streptococcus pneumoniae_ (formerly _Diplococcus
_
_pneumoniae_), _Proteus mirabilis_, _Escherichia coli _and
_Klebsiella_ species.
_Endocarditis_ due to _staphylococcus aureus_ (penicillin-sensitive
and
penicillin-resistant) and group A beta-haemolytic streptococci.
PERIOPERATIVE PROPHYLAXIS:
The prophylactic administration of cefazolin perioperatively
(preoperatively,
intraoperatively and postoperatively) may reduce the incidence of
certain
postoperative infections in patients undergoing surgical procedures
