Azaperone is a neuroleptic of the butyrophenone series for specific
use in pigs. It produces
predictable psychomotor sedation without narcosis after intramuscular
injection. The animal
becomes quiet and comparatively indifferent to the environment.
The degree of sedation is dose-related. Adult animals require
comparatively lower dose
than half-grown animals.
At very low doses 0.5mg/kg, the animal is slightly sedated, yet it can
be easily driven. With
increasing doses, the animal becomes increasingly drowsy and slow. At
2mg/kg, it lies
down for about two hours, can hardly be driven and ceases to be
aggressive. At higher
doses, the animals can hardly stand, and its defence reactions have
markedly decreased.
Minor therapeutic interventions may be performed, although there is no
analgesia. Dilation
of the ear veins facilitates blood sampling and intravenous
injections. The induction period
is short: the drug is effective after only a few minutes. Peak effect
is reached after about
15 minutes in young animals and 30 minutes in adult animals. The
duration of action is 1-6
hours.

SIDE EFFECTS
TRANQIL™ Injection is well tolerated and has a wide
safety margin. Salivation and panting may occur at high
doses. These
side-effects
disappear
spontaneously
and leave no lasting damage.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
For use by Intramuscular injection only.
Use contents within 28 days of first broaching of the
vial.
Discard the unused portion.
DOSAGE: 1-2 MG/KG INTRAMUSCULARLY.
