The device consists of a rubber mat, embedded with an optical fibre mesh and a single sensor, which is connected by a USB cable to a personal computer running Windows10. The USB cable provides power to the mat and also transmits commands and data between the mat and the computer. The device gives healthcare and medical practitioners an indication through a graphical display of a person?s postural sway whilst they are standing on the mat. The degree of postural sway shown on the graphical display can assist the practitioner to assess a person's balance ability.
