General Directions:
Pharmacology:
Cephalexin is a broad spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic which is
chemically related
to the penicillins. It is resistant to the action of β-lactamases,
including staphylococcal
penicillinase. It is therefore active against strains of
Staphylococcus aureus that are
insensitive to penicillin (or related antibiotics such as ampicillin
or amoxycillin).
Cephalexin is bactericidal and exerts its activity by destroying the
integrity of the cell walls.
Effective blood levels are generally achieved within two hours of
dosing.
Cephalexin is rapidly, and almost completely, absorbed after oral
administration; it is
excreted in the urine in high concentration.
