WHAT DELTACARBON
IS USED FOR
Deltacarbon is used for:
• Acute poisoning (exposure to a poison on
one
occasion
or
during
a
short
period
of
time)
-
By preventing absorption of orally ingested
poisonous
substances
and
accelerating
elimination of those substances.
•
Acute diarrhoea (sudden onset and lasts
less than four weeks)
HOW DELTACARBON
WORKS
Medicinal charcoal is an effective adsorbent
of a wide variety of drugs and chemicals and
thus
reduces
their
absorption
from
the
gastrointestinal tract (GI). The very define
particle size of medicinal charcoal increases
its
overall
surface
area
and
adsorptive
capacity.
BEFORE YOU USE DELTACARBON_ _

_When you must not use it_
• Patients with absence of bowel sounds
• Patients with GI perforation (a hole forms
all
the
way
through
the
stomach,
large
bowel, or small intestine)
•
Patients
with
intestinal
obstruction
(blockage
of
the
bowel
that
prevents
the
contents
of
the
intestine
from
passing
through)
• Patients with recent surgery
•
Patients
with
risk
of
GI
haemorrhage
(bleeding)
• Patients with febrile diarrhoea (having or
showing the symptoms of fever)
• Hypersensitive to any other excipients of
Deltacarbon

_Before you start to use it _
Tell your doctor if you:
• If you have persistent diarrhoea (diarrhoea
that lasts at least 4 weeks)
• If you are less than 6 years old
• If you have poisoning caused by corrosive
products or petroleum
• If you are intoxicated with substances like
lithium,
thallium,
cyanide,
iron
salts,
methanol, ethanol, and ethylene glycol.

therapy
should
be
given
to
protect
against

DESCRIPTION
Black round tablet with a break line on one side.
Each tablet contains medicinal (activated) charcoal 250 mg.
INDICATION
_Deltacarbon_ is indicated for:
• Acute poisoning
- By preventing absorption of orally ingested poisonous substances
and
accelerating
elimination
of
those
substances, which
are
subject to enterohepatic circulation.
• Acute diarrhoea
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
Acute poisoning
A high dose of 0.5 – 1g/kg body weight must be administered in
acute intoxications.
• Adults
: 2 – 4 _Deltacarbon_ tablet/kg body weight
• Children
: 3 – 4 _Deltacarbon_ tablet/kg body weight

Administration
of
the
slurry/suspension
by
gastric
tube
in
unconscious patients should be done under medical supervision.
For elimination of poisonous substances, which are subject to
enterohepatic circulation, the administration may be repeated at
intervals of 2 – 4 hours. Should multiple dose administration be
required, slurry/suspension can be given in isotonic saline or full
electrolyte solution to rule out the risk of hypochloraemia.
In
addition,
it
is
recommended
to
take
sodium
sulphate
(1
tablespoonful for adult or ½ - 1 tablespoonful for children) with a
glass of water 30 – 60 minutes later as this saline laxative induces
rapid intestinal passage. This removes the poison that is bound to
charcoal from gastrointestinal tract before part of the poisonous
substance can be released.
Diarrhoea
• 2 – 4 _Deltacarbon_ tablets are administered 3-4 times daily.
• Half of this dose is recommended for children.
