Manufacturer and Product Registration Holder 10. Date of Revision WHAT CHLORMINE IS USED FOR Chlormine is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergy, hay fever, and the common cold. These symptoms include rash, watery eyes, itchy eyes/nose/ throat/ skin, cough, runny nose, and sneezing. HOW CHLORMINE WORK This medication works by blocking a certain natural substance (histamine) that your body makes during an allergic reaction. By blocking another natural substance made by your body (acetylcholine), it helps dry up some body fluids to relieve symptoms such as watery eyes and runny nose. BEFORE YOU USE CHLORMINE _-When you must not take it _ Do not take Chlormine if: • are allergic (hypersensitive) to chlorpheniramine or any of the other ingredients. • If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding. • Avoid alcohol _-Before you start to take it _ You should check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking Chlormine if: • you are pregnant or breastfeeding • have a history of severe allergic reactions Driving and using machines Chlormine may make you feel drowsy or dizzy. Make sure you are not affected before you drive or operate machinery. _-Taking other medicines_ Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. COMPOSITION: Chlorpheniramine Maleate 4mg/5ml PHARMACOLOGY: Chlorpheniramine is a sedating antihistamine of alkylamine derivative, which competes with histamine for H 1 -receptor. It also has antimuscarinic effect. PHARMACOKINETICS: Chlorpheniramine is absorbed through gastrointestinal tract relatively slowly and undergoes considerable first pass metabolism. It achieves peak plasma concentration about 2.5 to 6 hours after being administered orally. INDICATIONS: Symptomatic relief of allergy such as rhinitis, runny nose, sneezing, hay fever, allergic skin conditions and urticaria. RECOMMENDED DOSAGE: Orally Adults : 4mg (5ml) 3 to 4 times daily Children: 2-5 years : 1mg (1.25ml) 3 to 4 times daily 6-12 years : 2mg (2.5ml) 3 to 4 times daily CONTRAINDICATIONS Patients who are hypersensitive to Chlorpheniramine or to any of its ingredients. SIDE EFFECTS: Sedation, dizziness, muscular weakness and incoordination. Gastro-intestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation, and epigastric pain, difficulty in micturition, dryness of the mouth; blurred vision. PRECAUTIONS/WARNINGS: When used for treatment of cough and cold; Not to be used in children less than 2 years of age. To be used with caution and doctor’s/ pharmacist’s advice in children 2 to 6 years of age. This preparation may cause drowsiness. If affected, do not drive or operate machinery. Avoid alcohol. Chlorpheniramine may enhance the sedative effect of central nervous system depressants including alcohol, barbiturates, hypnotics, narcotic analgesics, sedatives, and tranquillisers. It may also enhance the effects of anticholinergic drugs administered concomitantly. USE IN PREGNANCY AND LACTATION: There are no adequate Chlorpheniramine studies in pregnant and lactating women.
