Uro-Tainer ® Catheter Maintenance Solutions A GUIDE TO BEST PRACTICE INTRODUCTION Long term indwelling catheters can cause many problems, therefore the care and maintenance of indwelling urinary catheters is of major nursing concern. These problems can be minimised by individual assessments, a holistic approach and evidence based practice. The Uro-Tainer concept was developed to replace the use of bladder syringes for ‘washing’ out catheters in the 1980’s. This concept reduced the associated risks of high pressure and suction on the bladder mucosa that occurred with the use of the ‘bladder syringe’. The various Uro-Tainer solutions available all have different indications for use but the most common indication is that of catheter encrustation. Professor Getliffe (1994, 1998, 2000) found that recurrent catheter encrustation leading to blockage occurs in up to half of patients who are catheterised long-term and that these mineral deposits can be dissolved by acidic solutions e.g. Suby G and Solutio R. This booklet aims to: Describe best practice in relation to Uro-Tainer catheter maintenance solutions Describe each Uro-Tainer solution and its correct use Offer general advice regarding catheter care THESE GUIDELINES ARE NO SUBSTITUTE FOR YOUR PROFESSIONAL JUDGEMENT OR ACCOUNTABILITY.
