WHAT UNILAC USED FOR
UNLAC is used for:
-constipation
which
fails
to
adequately respond to a high-fibre
diet and other general measures
-disorders where bowel movement
needs to be facilitated
-treat hepatic encephalopathy (i.e.
the
brain
disturbance
associated
with
chronic
liver
failure,
in
particular cirrhosis of the liver).
HOW UNILAC WORKS
In the colon, lactulose is broken
down
by
bacterial
enzymes
to
short-chain
fatty
acids,
mainly
lactic
acid
and
acetic
acid.
The
laxative activity of lactulose is due
to two effects:
- Osmotic water retention triggered
by
the
disaccharide
and
acids
increase
the
bulk
of
the
colonic
contents.
- The acids are thought to stimulate
peristalsis directly.
BEFORE YOU USE UNILAC
_-When you must not take it_
-
If you are allergic to lactose or
any of the other ingredients of
UNILAC.
-
If you have symptoms of stomach
ache, vomiting and fever. This
might
be
a
sign
of
a
serious
disorder, e.g. bowel obstruction
(ileus)
or
gastrointestinal
inflammation.
If
you
are
experiencing such symptoms, you
should
consult
a
doctor
immediately.
-
If you are suffering from a very
rare
condition
called
galactose
intolerance,
you
must
not
use
UNILAC
because
due
to
the
manufacturing process, UNILAC
contains
small
amounts
of
galactose.
_-Before you start to take it_
This
medicine
contains
fructose,
galactose and lactose, if you have
been told by your doctor that you
have an intolerance to some sugars,
contact your doctor before taking
UNILAC.
If
you
have
been
experiencing
constipation for a prolonged period,
you should consult a doctor and
have
yourself
examined
before
starting
treatment
with
UNILAC
