Please read this leaflet carefully before you take NEXT CHOICE. 
This leaflet answers some common questions about NEXT CHOICE.  It does not contain all of 
the available information.  It does not take the place of talking to your doctor or pharmacist. 
All medicines have benefits and risks.  Your doctor has weighed the risks of you using NEXT 
CHOICE against the benefits they expect it will have for you.

WHAT NEXT CHOICE IS USED FOR  
NEXT CHOICE is an emergency contraceptive that can be used after unprotected sex or 
where a contraceptive method has failed.  This type of contraception is often called "the 
morning-after pill". 
Each pack contains two round, peach coloured tablets.  Each tablet contains 750 micrograms 
of levonorgestrel, which is the active ingredient. 
_HOW DOES NEXT CHOICE WORK? _
NEXT CHOICE is an emergency contraceptive which is taken after unprotected sex.  It is 
thought to work by: 
•  Stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg;  
•  Preventing sperm from fertilising any egg you may have already released; or  
•  Stopping a fertilised egg from attaching itself to your womb lining.  

NEXT CHOICE helps to stop a pregnancy before it is established.  It does not work if you are 
already pregnant. 
NEXT CHOICE can help to prevent you from getting pregnant, but you must take the first 
tablet within 72 hours (three days) of having unprotected sex.  The tablets are more effective 
if they are taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex.  You need to take the

side.  Each tablet contains 750mcg 
levonorgestrel. 
USES 
_ACTIONS _
The precise mode of action of NEXT CHOICE is
not known.  At the recommended 
regimen, levonorgestrel is thought to work
mainly by preventing ovulation and 
fertilisation if the intercourse has
taken place in the preovulatory phase, when the 
likelihood of fertilisation is the highest.  NEXT
CHOICE may also cause endometrial 
changes
that discourage implantation.  NEXT CHOICE is not effective once the 
process of implantation has begun. 
At the recommended regimen, levonorgestrel is
not expected to induce significant 
modification of blood clotting factors,
and lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. 
It has been estimated that levonorgestrel 750mcg (2 tablets 12 hours
apart) prevents 
85% of expected pregnancies.  Efficacy appears
to decline with time after 
intercourse (95% within 24 hours,
85% if used between 24 and 48 hours and/or 58% 
if used between 48 and 72 hours).  Efficacy after 72 hours
is unknown. 
_PHARMACOKINETICS _
Orally administered levonorgestrel is
rapidly and almost completely absorbed. 
Following ingestion of one tablet of levonorgestrel
750mcg tablet, maximum drug 
serum levels of 14.1 ng/ml were
found at 1.6 hours.  Thereafter, levonorgestrel 
serum levels decrease in two disposition phases
with mean elimination half-lives 
which range from about 9 hours
to 14.5 hours.  Levonorgestrel is not excreted in 
unchanged form but as metabolites.  Levonorgestrel metabolites
are excreted in 
about equal proportions
