PRODUCT DESCRIPTION  
Niaspan extended release tablets
contain nicotinic acid, which at therapeutic doses is an antihyperlipidemic agent. 
Nicotinic acid (niacin, or 3-pyridinecarboxylic acid)
is a white, crystalline powder and is soluble in water. 
Nicotinic extended release tablets are
an unscored, medium-orange, film-coated tablet for
oral administration and are 
available in three tablet strengths
containing 500, 750, and 1000 mg nicotinic
acid. The tablets also contain the 
inactive ingredients hypromellose, povidone,
stearic acid, and polyethylene glycol, and
the following coloring agents: 
FD&C yellow #6/sunset yellow FCF Aluminum Lake, synthetic red
and yellow iron oxides, and titanium dioxide. 

INDICATIONS 
Treatment of dyslipidaemia, particularly in
patients with combined mixed dyslipidaemia, characterized by elevated 
levels of LDL-cholesterol and
triglycerides and low HDL-chloesterol, and in patients with primary 
hypercholesterolaemia.
Niaspan should be used in patients in combination with HMG-CoA reductase
inhibitors 
(statins), when the cholesterol lowering effect of HMG-CoA
reductase inhibitor monotherapy is inadequate. Niaspan 
can be used as monotherapy only in patients who do not tolerate HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. Diet and other non-
pharmacological
treatments (e.g. exercise, weight reduction) should be continued
during therapy with Niaspan.  

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION 
Niaspan should be taken at bedtime, after a low-fat snack (e.g.
an apple, low fat yoghurt, slice of bread) and doses 
should be individualised according to the patient’s response.
