WHAT KENACOMB 
OINTMENT IS USED FOR 

KENACOMB is an ointment 
containing a combination of the 
following medicines: 

• _nystatin _which is used to treat 
skin infections caused by a family 
of yeast-like fungi called _Candida_. 
This condition is known as 
candidiasis or thrush. _Candida _
_albicans _is the most common 
cause of thrush. 

Symptoms of skin infections 
caused by _Candida _include itching, 
redness, small blisters cracking or 
scaling. These infections usually 
occur between folds of the skin or 
around the nails. 

• _neomycin_, is an antibacterial 
medicine 

• _gramicidin_, is an  antibacterial 
medicine 

• _triamcinolone acetonide_, an anti-
inflammatory medicine which 
stops redness and itching. 

KENACOMB ointment is used to 
relieve the redness and itching of 
skin conditions which are likely to 
become infected or are already 
infected.

KENACOMB 

DESCRIPTION 

KENACOMB  contains  the  synthetic  corticosteroid  triamcinolone  acetonide;  the 
antifungal  agent  nystatin;  and  the  antibiotic  agents  neomycin  sulphate  and 
gramicidin. 

Kenacomb  for  topical  use  contains  triamcinolone  acetonide  1mg  (0.1%).  neomycin 
2.5mg  (as  sulphate),  gramicidin  0.25mg  and  nystatin  100,000  units  per  gram  in  an 
ointment base. 

PHARMACOLOGY 

Triamcinolone  acetonide,  a  topical  corticosteroid  has  anti-inflammatory,  antipruritic 
and vasoconstrictive actions. 

The  mechanism  of  anti-inflammatory  activity  of  topical  corticosteroids  is  unclear.  
Various laboratory methods, including vasoconstrictor assays, are used to compare 
and predict potencies and/or clinical efficacies of the topical corticosteroids.  There is 
some  evidence  to  suggest  that  a  recognisable  correlation  exists  between 
vasoconstrictor potency and therapeutic efficacy in man. 

Neomycin and gramicidin provide antibacterial activity against microorganisms likely 
to be responsible for topical bacterial infections. 

These ingredients give symptomatic relief of the pain, burning and itching of infected 
skin, while combating the relevant bacterial and/or monilial
infection. 

PHARMACOKINETICS 
The  extent  of  percutaneous  absorption  of  topical  steroids  is  determined  by  many 
factors  including  the  vehicle,  the  integrity  of  the  epidermal  barrier  and  the  use  of 
occlusive dressings. 

Topical  corticosteroids  can  be  absorbed  from  normal  intact  skin.    Inflammation 
and/or  other  disease  processes  in  the  skin  increase
