1. WHAT SODIUM BICARBONATE INJECTION IS AND
WHAT IT IS USED FOR
Sodium Bicarbonate is one of a group of medicines known
as alkalinising agents. It is used to correct the acid-alkaline
balance in the body.
This medicine is used to control blood acidity following kidney
failure, diabetic coma or after a heart attack.
2. BEFORE YOU ARE GIVEN SODIUM BICARBONATE
INJECTION
YOU SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN SODIUM BICARBONATE INJECTION IF:
• you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Sodium Bicarbonate
or any of the other ingredients of this medicine, listed in
section 6 of this leaflet
• your breathing is faster or deeper than usual
(hyperventilation), or slower or more shallow than usual
(hypoventilation)
• you have any blood abnormalities such as high levels of
sodium, low levels of calcium or chloride, or your blood is
less acidic than usual (your doctor will need to check this)
• you are having difficulty passing urine or are passing more
urine than usual
• you are dehydrated
• you have high blood pressure
• you have problems with your liver
• you have heart problems
• you are suffering from eclampsia (a serious complication of
pregnancy)
If any of the above apply to you or your child please tell your
doctor or nurse before you are given Sodium Bicarbonate
Injection.
TAKE SPECIAL CARE WITH SODIUM BICARBONATE INJECTION
Your doctor or nurse may want to regularly check your blood
acid levels during the course of treatment with this medicine.
TAKING OTHER MEDICINES
Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have
recently taken any other medicines, including medicines
obtained without a prescription, including:
• corticosteroids or corticotropin (medicines used to reduce
swelling or to treat hormone problems)

4. Clinical particulars
4.1 Therapeutic indications
For the control of severe metabolic acidosis, such as renal failure,
diabetic coma, or foliowing cardiac
arrest.
4.2 Posology and method of administration

By slow intravenous injection or infusion.
An amount appropriate to the body - base deficiency up to 300 mmol.
Plasma pH should be measured at
regular intervals.
4.3 Contraindications
Not to be administered to patients with metabolic or respiratory
alkalosis, hypocalcaemia,
hypochlorhydria, hypertension, hypoventilation, chloride depletion or
hyperosmolar states such as anuria
or oliguria, edematous sodium retaining conditions such as hepatic
cirrhosis, congestive heart failure and
toxemia of pregnancy.
Administration of sodium bicarbonate is contraindicated in patients
taking diuretics known to produce
hypochloremic alkalosis.
4.4 Special warnings and precautions for use
Overtreatment with bicarbonate must be avoided. Frequent monitoring of
serum electrolytes and acid-
base status is essential.
Sodium bicarbonate should be administered with extreme caution to
patients with oedema, aldosteronism,
potassium depletion or respiratory acidosis.
4.5 Interaction with other medicinal products and other forms of
interaction
Caution should be used when administering sodium ions to patients
receiving corticosteroids or
corticotropin.
Urinary alkalisation will increase renal clearance of tetracyclines,
especially doxycycline. It will increase
the half-lives and duration of action of basic drugs such as
quinidine, amphetamines, ephedrine and
pseudoephedrine.
Concurrent use in patients taking potassium supplements decreases
serum potassium concentrations by
