HYPROMELLOSE 0.3% W/V EYE DROPS
NAME:
Hypromellose 0.3% w/v eye drops
INTENDED PURPOSE/USE:
Lubrication of the eye. Blumont Hypromellose Drops are an ocular
lubricant,
intended for use as artificial tears. The soothing and lubricating
qualities of
Hypromellose relieves ocular discomfort and irritation associated with
dry eyes
and environmental factors such as wind, salt water, smoke or computer
work.
FORMULATION:
Each gram contains Hypromellose 3.0 mg/ml, benzalkonium chloride 0.1
mg/ml,
sodium chloride 0.45 mg/ml, potassium chloride 0.37 mg/ml, borax
0.19mg/ml,
boric acid 0.19 mg/ml, distilled water q.s.
PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS:
Hypromellose (HPMC or Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose) is a substituted
cellulose
ether that is commonly used in artificial tear formulations. (Pensyl
2001) This
colloid dissolves in water to produce a colorless solution of varying
viscosity
(according to the concentration). It has proper optical clarity, a
refractive index
similar to cornea, and is nearly inert chemically. Its relative lack
of toxicity, its
viscous properties, and its beneficial effects on tear film stability
have made
cellulose ethers such as hypromellose useful components of artificial
tear
preparations.
Hypromellose is not pharmacologically active; it exerts its
therapeutic effect by
virtue of the physical characteristics of the eye drops acting as an
ocular lubricant.
After instillation, hypromellose eye drops spreads evenly over the
ocular surface
and forms a transparent film over the conjunctival and corneal
surfaces without
any streaks. Hypromellose is slightly less viscous than
methylcellulose but
possess cohesive and emollient properties equal to or superior to
methylcellulose.
(Pensyl 2001) Its very good surface properties are considered superior
to other
methylcellulose preparations. (Marquardt 1992)
Studies have also shown that these viscous substances slow the
elimination of
tear fluid as a result of their high molecular structure and the
tendency of such
molecules to form networks. A
