INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS RELATING TO THE HANDLING,
USE, STORAGE AND DISPOSAL OF RADIOPHARMACEUTICALS
1
Most countries have legislation governing the handling, use, storage,
administration, disposal and
transportation of radiopharmaceuticals. Such legislation may require
that a person be nominated
to advise on and supervise radiological protection. Users of
radiopharmaceuticals must make
themselves aware of and observe the local regulations and codes of
practice which relate to such
matters. In the absence of local legislation, users should comply with
internationally recognised
standards such as those promulgated by the International Atomic Energy
Agency and the
International Commission on Radiological Protection.
2 All operations involving this radiopharmaceutical should be carried
out in restricted areas by per-
sons trained and authorised in the safe use, handling and
administration to humans of radiophar-
maceuticals.
Storage of radioactive materials should be in specially designated
areas accessible only by
authorised personnel.
3 No smoking, eating or drinking should be allowed in those areas
designated for the use and sto-
rage of radiopharmaceuticals. Pipetting of radioactive materials must
not be done by mouth.
4 Care should be taken to prevent ingestion or contact with skin or
clothing and to minimize radia-
tion exposure to occupational workers and unnecessary exposure to
patients and other persons.
The use of gloves, protective clothing and appropriate shielding
should be in compliance with
local regulatory and laboratory procedures. Hands should always be
washed after any manipula-
tion involving radioactive materials.
5 Care should be observed to avoid contamination of working areas and
patient treatment areas. If
contamination occurs, the affected areas should be thoroughly washed
with an appropriate
cleaning agent (e. g. detergent). Follow the local rules and if
appropriate notify the person respon-
