DATE OF PREPARATION January 2020 FECHA DE REDACCIÓN Enero 2020 INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS RELATING TO THE HANDLING, USE, STORAGE AND DISPOSAL OF RADIOPHARMACEUTICALS 1 Most countries have legislation governing the handling, use, storage, administration, disposal and transportation of radiopharmaceuticals. Such legislation may require that a person be nominated to advise on and supervise radiological protection. Users of radiopharmaceuticals must make themselves aware of and observe the local regulations and codes of practice which relate to such matters. In the absence of local legislation, users should comply with internationally recognised standards such as those promulgated by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the International Commission on Radiological Protection. 2 All operations involving this radiopharmaceutical should be carried out in restricted areas by per- sons trained and authorised in the safe use, handling and administration to humans of radiophar- maceuticals. Storage of radioactive materials should be in specially designated areas accessible only by authorised personnel. 3 No smoking, eating or drinking should be allowed in those areas designated for the use and sto- rage of radiopharmaceuticals. Pipetting of radioactive materials must not be done by mouth. 4 Care should be taken to prevent ingestion or contact with skin or clothing and to minimize radia- tion exposure to occupational workers and unnecessary exposure to patients and other persons. The use of gloves, protective clothing and appropriate shielding should be in compliance with local regulatory and laboratory procedures. Hands should always be washed after any manipula- tion involving radioactive materials. 5 Care should be observed to avoid contamination of working areas and patient treatment areas. If contamination occurs, the affected areas should be thoroughly washed with an appropriate cleaning agent (e. g. detergent).
