Date of revision WHAT GENTA EYE DROPS IS USED FOR GENTA EYE DROPS is used to prevent and treat infection of eye (conjunctiva, corneal and margin of eyelid) caused by bacteria. HOW GENTA EYE DROPS WORKS GENTA EYE DROPS contains the active ingredient called gentamicin which is an antibiotic that helps to clear up infections. BEFORE YOU USE GENTA EYE DROPS _-_ _ _ _When you must not use it _ Do not use GENTA EYE DROPS if you are allergic to _Gentamicin _or any of the other ingredients listed at the end of the leaflet. _-_ _ _ _Before you start to use it _ Before taking GENTA EYE DROPS, you must tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have, or have had, any of the following conditions: Allergic to any other medicines, foods or preservatives. If you are not sure if you have, or have had, any of these conditions, you should raise those concerns with your doctor or pharmacist. _Pregnancy _ ASK FOR YOUR DOCTOR’S ADVICE IF YOU ARE PREGNANT, OR LIKELY TO BECOME PREGNANT DURING YOUR COURSE OF MEDICATION. _Breastfeeding _ ASK FOR YOUR DOCTOR’S ADVICE IF YOU ARE BREASTFEEDING, OR LIKELY TO BREASTFEED DURING YOUR COURSE OF MEDICATION. _-_ _ _ _Taking other medicines _ Inform your doctor or pharmacist before taking GENTA EYE DROPS. The use of sulphacetamide (an antibiotic) with gentamicin in the treatment of eye infections is not recommended. COMPOSITION: Each ml contains Gentamicin Sulphate equivalent to Gentamicin 0.3% w/v _Preservative used: _Benzalkonium Chloride 0.02% w/v PHARMACODYNAMICS: Gentamicin inhibits protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria by binding to specific sites on bacterial ribosomes to cause a misreading of the genetic code. It is active against a wide range of gram-negative organism including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus species (indole positive and indole negative), Neisseria species, Klebsiella enterobacter and Serratia species. It is also active against some gram-positive organisms, eg. Staphylococcus (including methicillin and penicillin resistant strain). Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside which has bactericidal action. It acts by inhibiting protein synthesis is susceptible bacteria. Gentamicin possesses a wide spectrum of activity being effective against both Gram – positive and Gram – negative organisms, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. PHARMACOKINETICS: With regard to ocular pharmacokinetics, Gentamicin is not very lipid soluble and thus it does not easily pass through the corneal epithelium. Only very low levels of Gentamicin will be absorbed systemically. Gentamicin is excreted in the urine. The biological half – life is 1 – 4 hours. INDICATION: The treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the conjunctiva, cornea, eyelids, tear pharitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis, episcleritis, dacrocystitis, corneal ulcers, eyes and infected eye sockets. Genta Eye Drops may also be used as a prophylactic agent for the prevention of ocular infection if injury makes the eye or adjacent area vulnerable to infection. Representative conditions are: after removal of foreign bodies, after burns or laceration of the lids of conjunctivae, after damage from chemical or physical agents, and before and after eye surgery.
