GENTA EYE DROPS 0.3%
DESCRIPTION:
Genta Eye Drop is a clear, colourless liquid.
COMPOSITION:
Each ml contains Gentamicin Sulphate equivalent to Gentamicin 0.3% w/v
_Preservative used: _Benzalkonium Chloride 0.02% w/v
PHARMACODYNAMICS:
Gentamicin inhibits protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria by
binding to specific sites on bacterial ribosomes to cause a misreading
of the genetic code. It is active against a wide
range of gram-negative organism including Escherichia coli,
Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus species (indole positive and indole
negative), Neisseria species, Klebsiella
enterobacter and Serratia species. It is also active against some
gram-positive organisms, eg. Staphylococcus (including methicillin and
penicillin resistant strain).
Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside which has bactericidal action. It acts
by inhibiting protein synthesis is susceptible bacteria. Gentamicin
possesses a wide spectrum of activity
being effective against both Gram – positive and Gram – negative
organisms, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
PHARMACOKINETICS:
With regard to ocular pharmacokinetics, Gentamicin is not very lipid
soluble and thus it does not easily pass through the corneal
epithelium.
Only very low levels of Gentamicin will be absorbed systemically.
Gentamicin is excreted in the urine. The biological half – life is 1
– 4 hours.
INDICATION:
The treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the conjunctiva,
cornea, eyelids, tear pharitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, keratitis,
keratoconjunctivitis, episcleritis, dacrocystitis,
corneal ulcers, eyes and infected eye sockets. Genta Eye Drops may
also be used as a prophylactic agent for the prevention of ocular
infection if injury makes the eye or adjacent
area vulnerable to infection. Representative conditions are: after
removal of foreign bodies, after burns or laceration of the lids of
conjunctivae, after damage from chemical or
physical agents, and before and after eye surgery.
