WHAT ACARBOCIN IS USED FOR Acarbocin contains the active ingredient acarbose. It belongs to a class of medicines called “alpha glucosidase inhibitors” and it helps to control your blood sugar levels in conjunction with diet, exercise, weight loss and other measures by slowing down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates (complex sugars) from your diet. This reduces the abnormally high blood sugar levels that occur after each meal. Acarbocin is used for the treatment of diabetes (both non-insulin and insulin dependent) in association with diet. 1 ACARBOCIN 29082013 New Zealand Data Sheet ACARBOCIN _ _ _ _ _ACARBOSE 50 MG AND 100 MG TABLETS _ This product may not be interchangeable with similar products on the New Zealand market PRESENTATIONS Tablets 50 mg: round, biconvex, white to off- white tablets with bossing “ACA 50” on one side. Tablets 100 mg: round, biconvex, white to off-white tablets with a score-line on one side and bossing “ACA 100” on the other side. INDICATIONS Acarbocin is indicated for the additional treatment of insulin dependent and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus in association with diet. DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION _RECOMMENDED USUAL DOSE FOR ADDITIONAL THERAPY IN ASSOCIATION WITH DIET IN PATIENTS WITH _ _DIABETES MELLITUS _ Because efficacy and tolerability vary, the dosage must be adjusted by the doctor to suit each individual patient. Acarbocin is intended for continuous long-term treatment. _DOSAGE REGIMEN _ Unless otherwise prescribed the recommended dosage is as follows: Initially 1 tablet of 50 mg Acarbocin three times daily Up to 2 tablets of 50 mg Acarbocin three times daily _or_ 1 tablet of 100mg Acarbocin three times daily. A further increase in dosage to 200 mg Acarbocin three times daily may occasionally be necessary. The dose may be increased after 4 – 8 weeks. An increase can also be made later in the course of the treatment if the patient shows an inadequate clinical response.
