SUSTAINED-RELEASE TABLETS
COMPOSITION
_Ikapress SR 180 mg _
Each sustained-release tablet contains:
_Active Ingredient _
Verapamil hydrochloride
180 mg
_Other Ingredients _
_ _Sodium alginate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, magnesium
stearate, talc,
titanium dioxide, polyethylene glycol, iron oxide red, hydroxypropyl
methyl cellulose._ _

_Sodium content: 27.8 mg per tablet. _

Verapamil hydrochloride
240 mg

_ _Sodium alginate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone USP (PVP
K-30), magnesium
stearate, dry color dispersion light green, polyethylene glycol 400.

MECHANISM OF ACTION
Pharmacotherapeutic group: Selective calcium channel blockers with
direct cardiac
effects, phenylalkylamine derivatives.

Verapamil is a calcium antagonist which blocks the inward movement of
calcium in
cardiac muscle cells, in smooth muscle cells of the coronary and
systemic arteries
and in the cells of the intracardiac conduction system. Thus,
verapamil reduces
cardiac work and impulse conduction, and dilates the peripheral
arteries.
Based on its vasodilating properties, the antihypertensive action of
Ikapress leads
to a reduction in systemic vascular resistance. Ikapress reduces both
raised systolic
and diastolic blood pressures with little or no reflex tachycardia.
The decrease in systemic and coronary vascular resistance and the
sparing effect
on intracellular oxygen consumption appear to explain the anti-anginal
properties of
the product.
The sustained-release characteristics of Ikapress are not altered when
the tablet is
divided in half.
