CITANEST DENTAL is a medicine 
which is used to stop pain during 
dental procedures.  
This leaflet answers some of the 
common questions people ask about 
CITANEST DENTAL.  It does not 
contain all the information that is 
known about CITANEST DENTAL.  
It does not take the place of talking 
to your dentist, dental nurse or 
pharmacist.

WHAT CITANEST 
DENTAL IS FOR 
___________________________________________________________________  
CITANEST DENTAL is used to prevent 
or  relieve pain during dental 
procedures, but it will not put you 
to sleep.   
CITANEST DENTAL belongs to a group 
of medicines called local 
anaesthetics.  It is injected into the 
body where it makes the nerves 
unable to pass messages to the 
brain.  
Depending on the amount used, 
CITANEST DENTAL will either totally 
stop pain or will cause a partial loss 
of feeling.    
CITANEST DENTAL is often used with 
adrenaline or Octapressin
 
(felypressin) to make it last longer.  
Adrenaline and felypressin make 
the blood vessels at the site of 
injection narrower, which means 
you bleed less.  It is then easier for 
your dentist to see what is 
happening.

NAME OF DRUG  
4%  CITANEST
® 
DENTAL  contains  prilocaine  hydrochloride  as  the  active  substance.  The  product  also 
contains sodium chloride, water for injections, and may contain sodium hydroxide and/or hydrochloric acid 
for pH adjustment to 5.0-7.0.  
The chemical name of prilocaine hydrochloride is 2-(propylamino)-o-propionotoluidide hydrochloride; and 
it is also known as propitocaine hydrochloride.   
The CAS number of prilocaine hydrochloride is 1786-81-8 and the Australian Approved Name is prilocaine 
hydrochloride.  
The chemical structure of prilocaine hydrochloride is:

WITH  ADRENALINE  1:300,000  contains  prilocaine  hydrochloride  and  adrenaline  acid 
tartrate as the active substances. The product also contains: sodium chloride, sodium metabisulphite, water 
for injections and may also contain sodium hydroxide and/or
hydrochloric acid for pH adjustment to 3.0-5.0.  
The CAS number for adrenaline acid tartrate is 51 - 42 - 3. 
The chemical name for adrenaline is (R)-1-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-2-methylaminoethanol. The salt used in 
this product is adrenaline acid tartrate. Adrenaline is also known as
epinephrine.  
The Australian Approved Name is adrenaline acid tartrate.  
The chemical structure of adrenaline is:

® 
contains  prilocaine  as  prilocaine  hydrochloride  and 
felypressin as the active substances. The product also contains: sodium chloride and water for injections and 
may also contain sodium hydroxide and/or hydrochloric acid for pH
adjustment to 3.5-5.2.  
The vasoconstrictor octapressin is 2-(phenylalanine)-8-lysine
vasopressin; also known as felypressin.
