Date of Revision WHAT VENTOLIN IS USED FOR VENTOLIN is used in: Bronchial asthma Chronic bronchitis (inflammation of the airways that carry air to your lungs) Emphysema (damages to the air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs) HOW VENTOLIN WORKS VENTOLIN tablets contain salbutamol which belongs to a group of medicines called selective beta-2-adrenoceptor agonists, which can be used to relax the muscles of the airways. BEFORE YOU USE VENTOLIN - _When you must not use it _ Do not take VENTOLIN tablets and tell your doctor if you: are allergic (hypersensitive) to salbutamol or any other ingredients in VENTOLIN tablets are suspected to have uncomplicated premature labour or threatened abortion - _Before you start to use it _ Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking VENTOLIN tablets if you have: an overactive thyroid gland (thyrotoxicosis) diabetes hypoxia (deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues) severe heart disease, (such as ischaemic heart disease, irregular heart rhythm, severe heart failure) Tell your doctor if you experience symptoms such as chest pain, dyspnoea (shortness of breath) or other symptoms of worsening heart disease. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast- feeding tell your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine. CONFIDENTIAL [GSK Logo] VENTOLIN TABLETS Salbutamol QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE COMPOSITION VENTOLIN Tablets 2 mg each contain 2 mg salbutamol, as sulphate. VENTOLIN Tablets 4 mg each contain 4 mg salbutamol, as sulphate. PHARMACEUTICAL FORM 2 mg: White, circular, flat faced tablets with bevelled edges and engraved on one side with GX/CN3. 4 mg: White, circular, flat faced tablets with bevelled edges and engraved on one side with GX/CN5. CLINICAL PARTICULARS Indications Relief of bronchial a sthma of all types, chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Dosage and Administration VENTOLIN has a duration of action of 4 to 6 hours in most patients. Increasing use of 2 agonists may be a sign of worsening asthma. Under these conditions a reassessment of the patient's therapy plan may be required and concomitant glucocorticosteroid therapy should be considered. As there may be adverse effects associated with excessive dosing, the dosage or frequency of administration should only be increased on medical a dvice. Adults The usual effective dose is 4 milligrams 3 or 4 times per day. If adequate bronchodilation is not obtained each single dose may be gradually increased to as much as 8 milligrams.
