WHAT METHADONE IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR Methadone is a synthetic opiate (a morphine-like drug) used to treat opiate dependent patients. The treatment should be given at the same time as medical and psychological treatment and social rehabilitation. 2. Page 1 of 12 SUMMARY OF PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS 1 NAME OF THE MEDICINAL PRODUCT Methadone Martindale Pharma 2mg/ml oral solution 2 QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE COMPOSITION Each 1ml of solution contains 2mg of Methadone hydrochloride. Also contains sunset yellow (E110) 0.008mg/ml For the full list of excipients, see section 6.1. 3 PHARMACEUTICAL FORM Oral solution. Clear, yellow to orange solution with a scent of orange. 4 CLINICAL PARTICULARS 4.1 THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS Maintenance therapy in patients dependent on opioids concomitant with medical and psychological treatment and social rehabilitation. 4.2 POSOLOGY AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION A criterion for treatment with methadone is that the patient is taking part in a “methadone programme” with drug-assisted rehabilitation for drug abusers, approved by a relevant authority. For oral administration only. The medicinal product must not be injected. The dose must be adjusted for each individual patient. Page 2 of 12 The usual initial dose is 10-30 mg. For patients with high opioid tolerance, the initial dose is 25-40 mg. The dose is increased in steps of 10 mg at a time over a period of three weeks, usually to 70 or 80 mg. After a recommended stabilisation period of four weeks, the dose is adjusted, until the patient, does not have a need for intoxication and is without clinical signs of psychomotor function effects or abstinence symptoms. The usual dose is 60-120 mg of methadone per day, but some individuals may require higher doses. The dosage should be determined based upon clinical assessment supported by serum level monitoring.
