WHAT IS IN THIS LEAFLET 

Please read this carefully before you use your medicine. 
This leaflet provides a summary of the information available on your
medicine.  
If you have any concerns about this medicine, ask your doctor or
pharmacist. 
Keep this leaflet with the medicine. You may need to read it again. 

WHAT A-LICES SHAMPOO IS USED FOR AND HOW IT WORKS: 

A-LICES Shampoo is used for the treatment and eradication of head
lice, body lice and their eggs. 

BEFORE YOU USE A-LICES SHAMPOO 
_DO NOT USE A-LICES SHAMPOO: _

•  if you are allergic to Malathion or to any of the other
ingredients; 
•  to treat infants less than 6 months old, except on medical
advice. 

_BEFORE YOU START TO USE IT _

YOU MUST TELL YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST IF YOU ARE PREGNANT OR
BREAST-FEEDING. 

HOW A-LICES SHAMPOO IS USED 

ALWAYS CHECK THE LABEL FOR DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO USE IT. 

Your pharmacist will help if you are not sure. 

• avoid 
eyes; 
•  if you are a healthcare professional in regular contact
with this product you should wear protective 
gloves; 
•  for external use only; 
•  not for prolonged use; 
•  this product may affect permed, coloured or bleached hair. 

_ADULTS, CHILDREN AND INFANTS AGED 6 MONTHS AND OVER: _

For head lice – The source of infestation should be sought and
treated. Wet hair and apply sufficient 
quantity of shampoo to the roots of the hair and scalp and work up a
rich lather. Pay special attention to 
partings, back of the neck and around the ears. Leave on for at least
10 minutes before rinsing. Comb 
the hair whilst wet to remove dead lice and eggs (nits). 
A second application is usually recommended a week after the first
application.  

Bedding, comb, cap, towel, and clothing should be washed to prevent
re-infection. Avoid contact with 
infected persons. 

For pubic lice – Wet the area and apply directly to pubic hair,

_MALATHION SHAMPOO 1.0% W/W _
PRESENTATION 
A clear dark-green liquid shampoo with lavender
and citrus fragrances containing Malathion 1.0% w/w. 
USES 
_ACTIONS _
A-LICES Shampoo contains malathion, a widely
used organophosphorus insecticide which is active via 
cholinesterase inhibition effective against a wide range of insects,
but is one of the least toxic 
organophosphorus insecticides since it is rapidly detoxified by
plasma carboxylesterases. 
_PHARMACOKINETICS _
Percutaneous absorption of malathion is very limited. In a study in
human volunteers, approximately 4% 
of the dose applied to the skin was absorbed and this proportion did
not change with repeated daily 
application to the same site for 8 days. The proportion of the
dose recovered in urine was between 1.8% 
and 3.3%. 
Malathion is hydrolysed and detoxified by plasma carboxylesterases
much more rapidly in man than in 
insects, giving rise to selective toxicity and a low potential for
toxicity in man. 
_INDICATIONS _
For the treatment and eradication of head lice, pubic lice and
their eggs.  
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION 
The source of infestation should be sought and treated. All
persons in intimate contact with each other 
should be treated at the same time 
FOR HEAD LICE 
1 
Wet hair. Apply sufficient quantity of shampoo to the roots of the
hair and scalp and work up a rich 
lather. Pay special attention to parting, back of the neck and around
the ears. Leave on for at least 
10 minutes before rinsing.

A second application is usually recommended, a week after the first
application.

Bedding, comb, towels, pillows, bedding and clothing should
be washed.

Prevent re-infection by avoiding contact with infected persons.

Dead lice and eggs (nits) may be removed with a fine tooth comb. 
FOR PUBIC LICE

Wet area and apply shampoo directly to the pubic hair and the
hair between the legs and around the 
anus.
