Date of revision What Pharmaniaga Cephalexin Capsule is used for It is used to treat septicaemia (blood poisoning due to bacterial infection), bone and joint infections, including burn wound infections and urinary tract infections caused by bacterial infection. They are not effective in treating infection on nervous system. Pharmaniaga Cephalexin Capsule also as possible alternative for penicillin treatment to treat pneumonia (lung infection) and bacterial endocarditis (heart infection) caused by staphylococcal bacteria. How Pharmaniaga Cephalexin Capsule works Cephalexin is a first generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It possesses bactericidal effect similar to the penicillins, which acts by inhibiting synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. Before you use Pharmaniaga Cephalexin Capsule -When you must not use it Do not take Pharmaniaga Cephalexin Capsule if you are allergic to Pharmaniaga Cephalexin Capsule or any other cephalosporin antibiotics or any of its ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet. If you are not sure whether you should start taking this medicine, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. -Before you start to use it Tell your doctor if you have allergies to cephalosporins, penicillins or any other antibiotics. You may have an increased chance of being allergic to Pharmaniaga Cephalexin Capsule if you are allergic to any of these medicines. CONTRAINDICATIONS Patients who are known or suspected to be allergic to other cephalosporins should not be treated with cephalexin. Cephalosporins should be given with caution to penicillin-sensitive, as there is some evidence of partial cross-allergenicity between the penicillins and the cephalosporins. Patients have had severe reactions (including anaphylaxis) to both drugs. Cephalexin is contraindicated in patients with acute porphyria. Severe systemic infections, which require parenteral cephalosporin treatment, should not be treated orally during the acute stage. WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS 1) Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity reactions (including anaphylactoid and severe cutane- ous adverse reactions) have been reported in patients receiving therapy with beta-lactams. Before initiating therapy with Cephalexin, careful inquiry should be made concerning previous hypersensitivity reaction to penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems or other beta-lactam agents. If an allergic reaction occurs, Cephalexin must be discontinued immediately and appropriate alternative therapy instituted. 2) Care is also necessary in patients with known histories of allergy. 3) Cephalexin should be administered with caution in the presence of markedly impaired renal function as it is excreted mainly by the kidneys. Careful clinical and laboratory studies should be made because the safe dosage may be lower than that usually recommended. 4) Positive direct Coombs' tests have been reported during treatment with cephalosporin antibiotics, In haematological studies, or in transfusion cross-match- ing procedures when antiglobulin tests are performed on the minor side, or in Coombs' testing of new-borns whose mothers have received cephalosporin antibiotics before parturition, it should be recognised that a positive Coombs' test may be due to the drug.
