FOLATE _Enzyme immunoassay for _ _quantitative determination of folate concentration_ _ _ PRODUCT NAME: Cat.No. / REF N1705M24FOL Folate 24 Tests FOR IN VITRO DIAGNOSTIC USE ONLY INTENDED USE The test’s intended use is for quantitative determination of folate concentration in the human serum. INTRODUCTION As one of the B vitamins, folate or vitamin B9 is included in many functions in the body and its deficiency can cause diseases in both the elderly and young children. Folate deficiency is associated with megaloblastic anemia, neural tube defects, and cardiovascular diseases. Folate plays an important role in brain development and that is why it is necessary during growth. The most common defects caused by folate deficiencies are neural tube defects. Because of the important role in nucleic acid synthesis, folate is useful in the form of supplements during pregnancy and other cases of rapid tissue growth. It is also essential in maintaining homocysteine balance which contributes as a factor in occurrence of occlusive vascular disease and stroke. People susceptible to heart disease and various forms of cancer can also benefit from supplementation. In the circulation, folate is present in several different forms, some of which are more stable than others. There are two common forms: folic acid and N-methyltetrahydrofolate, the latter being more represented when it comes to analytical methods due to greater stability. Proteins that bind it are responsible for folate metabolism. There are two types in circulation: one helps in binding to the cell surface and the other soluble form exists in the circulation. These proteins, too, have the ability to bind several different derivatives including folic acid and N-methyltetrahydrofolate. Interaction between folic acid and folate-binding protein is stronger between it and methyltetrahydrofolate. Currently available tests on the market require an extraction step to release the folate derivatives from the bond with the folate-binding protein. In the past, folate Lees het volledige document
