PHARMACODYNAMICS

_Mechanism of Action _
Diazepam  is  a  member  of  the  group  of  classical  benzodiazepines  and  exhibits  anxiolytic,  sedative,
muscle relaxant and anti-convulsant effects.  This is presumed to be the result of facilitating the action
in the brain of gamma-aminobutyric acid, a naturally occurring inhibitory transmitter.

PHARMACOKINETICS

_Absorption and Bioavailability _
After oral administration, diazepam is rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract,
with peak plasma concentrations appearing 30 - 90 minutes after oral intake.  The speed of onset after
intramuscular (IM) administration is variable, depending on the muscle mass used and other factors.
