KEEP THIS LEAFLET WITH YOUR MEDICINE. You may need to read it again. WHAT CELAPRAM IS USED FOR Celapram is used to treat depression. Celapram belongs to a group of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). They are thought to work by acting on chemicals in your brain called amines. These amines are involved in controlling mood. ASK YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT WHY CELAPRAM HAS BEEN PRESCRIBED FOR YOU. Your doctor may have prescribed Celapram for another reason. Celapram is available only with a doctor's prescription. BEFORE YOU TAKE CELAPRAM _WHEN YOU MUST NOT TAKE IT_ DO NOT TAKE CELAPRAM IF YOU HAVE A CONDITION CALLED 'CONGENITAL LONG QT SYNDROME. AT HIGH DOSES, CELAPRAM CAN CAUSE CHANGES IN THE WAY THAT YOUR HEART BEATS. SEE YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY IF YOU EXPERIENCE AN IRREGULAR HEARTBEAT, SHORTNESS OF BREATH, DIZZINESS OR FAINTING WHILE TAKING CELAPRAM. DO NOT TAKE CELAPRAM IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO MEDICINES CONTAINING CITALOPRAM HYDROBROMIDE (E.G. CIPRAMIL) OR ANY OF THE INGREDIENTS LISTED AT THE END OF THIS LEAFLET. Some symptoms of an allergic reaction include skin rash, itching or hives; swelling of the face, lips or tongue which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing; wheezing or shortness of breath. CELAPRAM _Citalopram hydrobromide _ PRODUCT INFORMATION NAME OF THE MEDICINE Active ingredient: Citalopram hydrobromide Chemical name: 1-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-1-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,3-dihydro-5- isobenzofurancarbonitrile monohydrobromide. The active is present as a racemate. Structural formula: Molecular formula: C 20 H 21 FN 2 O, HBr Molecular weight: 405.3 CAS Registry no.: 59729-32-7 DESCRIPTION Citalopram hydrobromide is a white or almost white crystalline powder, odourless or practically odourless. Citalopram hydrobromide is soluble in methanol, sparingly soluble in water and acetone, soluble in ethanol (96%), freely soluble in chloroform and very slightly soluble in diethylether. No polymorphic forms have been observed. Excipients in Celapram includemaize starch, lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, crospovidone, macrogol 4000, magnesium stearate, hypromellose and titanium dioxide. PHARMACOLOGY Biochemical and behavioural studies have shown that citalopram is a potent inhibitor of 5- hydroxytryptamine (5-HT, serotonin) uptake. Tolerance to the inhibition of 5-HT-uptake is not induced by long-term treatment with citalopram. _In vitro _studies indicate that citalopram is one of the most selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) yet developed, with little or no effect on the uptake of noradrenaline (NA), dopamine (DA) and gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). In comparison with other SSRIs, the decreasing order of selectivity is CELAPRAM – Product Information 2 escitalopram, citalopram, sertraline, paroxetine, fluvoxamine and fluoxetine.
