WHAT RIVADEM IS USED FOR
Rivadem Capsules is indicated for the
treatment of mild to moderate dementia
of the Alzheimer's type (a progressive
brain
disorder
that
gradually
affects
memory, thinking and behaviour).
HOW RIVADEM WORKS
Rivastigmine
belongs
to
a
class
of
substances
called
cholinesterase
inhibitors.
Rivastigmine improves the function of
nerve cells in the brain. It works by
preventing the breakdown of a chemical
called
acetylcholine
by
blocking
the
enzymes
that
break
it
down.
This
chemical is
needed to help keep the
brain working properly.
Rivastigmine helps to slow down the
mental decline that happens in people
with Alzheimer's disease and it helps to
improve
the
ability
to
cope
with
everyday activities.
BEFORE YOU USE RIVADEM

_When you must not use it _
Do not take Rivadem if you have:
•
Hypersensitivity
to
rivastigmine,
other
carbamate
derivatives
or
other ingredients of Rivadem.
•
Severe liver impairment.
_Pregnancy and lactation_
_ _
Do
not
take
Rivadem
if
you
are
pregnant, trying to get pregnant or think
you may be pregnant.
Do not take Rivadem if you are breast-
feeding. Ask your doctor or pharmacist
for advice before taking any medicine.

_Before you start use it _
Please tell your doctor if you have:
•
Gastrointestinal
disorder
such
as
nausea and vomiting
•
Stomach
or
duodenal
ulcer,
difficulties
in
passing
urine,
seizures and low body weight
•
A heart rhythm disorder.
•
High blood pressure, hallucinations
(hear,
smell,
taste
or
feel
things
that do not exist).
•
Parkinson's disease.
•
History
of
asthma
or
breathing
problems.

Cholinomimetics may induce or exacerbate urinary obstruction and
seizures.
Caution is recommended in treating patients predisposed to such
diseases.
The use of rivastigmine in patients with severe Alzheimer’s
dementia, other type of dementia or other types of memory impairment
(e.g. age-related cognitive decline)
has not been investigated.
Like other cholinomimetics, rivastigmine may exacerbate or induce
extrapyramidal symptoms, including worsening in patients with
Parkinson’s disease.
DRUG INTERACTION
As a cholinesterase inhibitor, rivastigmine may exaggerate the effects
of succinylcholine-type muscle relaxants during anaesthesia.
In view of its pharmacodynamics effects, rivastigmine should not be
given concomitantly with other cholinomimetic drugs and might
interfere with the activity of
anticholinergic medications.
No pharmacokinetic interaction was observed between rivastigmine and
digoxin, warfarin, diazepam or fluoxetine in studies in healthy
volunteers. The increase
in prothrombin time induced by warfarin is not affected by
administration of rivastigmine. No untoward effects on cardiac
conduction were observed following
concomitant administration of digoxin and rivastigmine.
According to its metabolism, metabolic drug interactions appear
unlikely, although rivastigmine may inhibit the butyrylcholinesterase
mediated metabolism of
other drugs.
