WHAT DEXTROMETHORPHAN IS USED FOR
It is used for the relief of dry cough due to
minor throat and bronchial (tubes that carry
air into the lungs) irritation occurring with
colds or inhaled irritants.
HOW DEXTROMETHORPHAN WORKS
Dextromethorphan is a non-narcotic
medicine which suppresses cough reflex by
a direct effect on the cough center in the
brain.
BEFORE YOU USE DEXTROMETHORPHAN
_- When you must not use it _
Do not take Dextromethorphan if
- you are allergic to its active ingredient
or to other ingredients in it.
- you are taking, or have taken in the
last two weeks, drugs for depression
known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors
(MAOIs).
_- Before you start to use it _
Please inform your doctor if you have
any of the following:
- asthma
- liver disease
_Use in children _
- Not to be used in children less than 2
years of age.
- To be used with caution and on doctor’s
or pharmacist’s advice in children 2 to 6
years of age.
_Pregnancy and breastfeeding _
Safety for use in pregnancy and lactation has
not been established.
_- Taking other medicines _
Tell your doctor if you are taking any
other medicines that you buy without a
prescription from a pharmacy,
supermarket or health food shop.
Inform your doctor if you are taking
monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)
(antidepressant).
HOW TO USE DEXTROMETHORPHAN
_- How much to use _
Adult : 1- 2 teaspoonful 3 – 4 times daily.
Children 6 – 12 years old: 1 teaspoonful
3 – 4 times daily.
Children 2 – 5 years old: ½ teaspoonful
3 – 4 times daily.
Follow all directions given by your doctor
and pharmacist carefully.
