Date of revision What Pharmaniaga Cephalexin Suspension is used for It is used to treat septicaemia (blood poisoning due to bacterial infection), bone and joint infections, including burn wound infections and urinary tract infections caused by bacterial infection. They are not effective in treating infection on nervous system. Pharmaniaga Cephalexin Suspension also as possible alternative for penicillin treatment to treat pneumonia (lung infection) and bacterial endocarditis (heart infection) caused by staphylococcal bacteria. How Pharmaniaga Cephalexin Suspension works Cephalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It possesses bactericidal effect similar to the penicillins, which acts by inhibiting synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. Before you use Pharmaniaga Cephalexin Suspension -When you must not use it Do not take Pharmaniaga Cephalexin Suspension if you are allergic to Pharmaniaga Cephalexin Suspension or any other cephalosporin antibiotics or any of its ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet. If you are not sure whether you should start taking this medicine, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. -Before you start use it Tell your doctor if you have allergies to cephalosporins, penicillins or any other antibiotics. You may have an increased chance of being allergic to Pharmaniaga Cephalexin Suspension if you are allergic to any of these medicines. Before reconstitution After reconstitution COMPOSITION Each 5 mL of reconstituted suspension contains Cephalexin equivalent to 125 mg or 250 mg Cephalexin anhydrous. PHARMACODYNAMICS Cephalexin is an oral broad-spectrum antibiotic belong- ing to the group of semi-synthetic cephalosporins. In adequate concentrations it is bactericidal for sensitive proliferating micro-organisms by inhibiting the biosyn- thesis of the cell wall. Even patients with sensitive stomach tolerate the drug well. Spectrum of action Of the pathogens listed below, most strains show sensitivity. White to off white, granular powder, practically free from visible impurities. Orange coloured, viscous, free flowing, homogeneous suspension, practically free from visible impurities. Light yellow, free flowing granules with a characteristic fruity fragrance. Light yellow, sweet, viscous suspen- sion with a characteristic fruity flavour. : : : : RECOMMENDED DOSAGE ADULTS : 1 to 2 g daily given in divided doses at 6, 8 or 12 hourly intervals. INFANTS AND CHILDREN : 25 to 100 mg per kg body-weight daily in divided doses to a maximum of 4 g daily. A COMMON DOSAGE REGIMEN IS : Children age, 5 to 12 years - 250 mg three times daily. 1 to 5 years - 125 mg three times daily. Under 1 year - 62.5 mg to 125 mg twice daily. ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION Oral. CONTRAINDICATIONS Patients who are known or suspected to be allergic to other cephalosporins should not be treated with cephalexin. Cephalosporins should be given with caution to penicil- lin-sensitive, as there is some evidence of partial cross-allergenicity between the penicillins and the cephalosporins.
