Povidone iodine is an iodophor with a
powerful
broad
spectrum
germicidal
activity
against
a
wide
range
of
bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and
spores.
BEFORE YOU USE NW POVIDONE IODINE
10% W/V SOLUTION
_When you must not use it _
•
If you are allergic to iodine or any
of
other
ingredients
of
this
medicine.
•
Not
recommended
for
use
in
pregnant
women
and
nursing
mothers and newborn children.
•
Do not mix or co-administer with
disinfectants and/or antiseptics or
other agents used for the treatment
of wounds.
•
For regular or prolonged periods if
you have thyroid problems or if
you are taking lithium (an anti-
depressant).

For external use only

doctor
or
pharmacist
if
you
have
any
medical conditions, especially if
any of the following apply to you.

If you have had animal
bites,
deep
wounds,
serous burns (the chance
of
side
effects
may
be
increased)
o
If you are geriatric, there
is no specific information
comparing use of topical
iodine in the elderly with
use in other age groups.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A deep brown liquid.
PHARMACODYNAMICS
Povidone iodine is an antiseptic and disinfectants which liberates
iodine in contact with the skin.
PHARMACOKINETICS
Povidone iodine is an iodophor with a powerful broad-spectrum
germicidal activity against a wide range of
bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and spores.
INDICATION
Use to prevent and treat infections that may occur in minor scrapes
and cuts.
RECOMMENDED DOSAGE
Adults and infants 1 month and over: No special dosage recommendation.
Use medication for full time of
treatment, do not use for more than ten days.
Infants under 1 month: Use is not recommended.
ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION
Topical
WARNING AND PRECAUTIONS
•
Avoid application of povidone iodine into the eyes and nose.
•
NW Povidone Iodine 10%w/v Solution can be absorbed systemically during
the topical treatment of burns
and large areas of broken skin. The degree of absorption is
proportional to the depth and extent of the burn
or broken skin.
•
Prolonged treatment with NW Povidone Iodine 10%w/v Solution of
patients with severe and extensive burns
may cause metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia and renal impairment.

Special caution is needed in patients with pre-existing renal
insufficiency and in neonates and infants up to 6
months of age, pregnant and breast-feeding women. In such cases
benefit/risk assessment should be
performed and monitoring of thyroid function should be considered.
INTERACTION WITH OTHER MEDICAMENTS
Absorption of iodine from povidone iodine may interfere with thyroid
function tests by causing an increase in
protein bound iodine levels. Contamination with povidone Iodine of
several types of tests for the detection of
occult blood in urine may produce false positive results.
