NW Chlorhexidine Gluconate 5% w/v Topical Solution is a bisbiguanide antiseptic and disinfectant, which is bactericidal or bacteriostatic against a wide range of gram negative and gram positive vegetative bacteria, yeasts, dermatophyte fungi and lipophilic viruses. BEFORE YOU USE NW CHLORHEXIDINE GLUCONATE 5%W/V TOPICAL SOLUTION _- When you must not use it _ If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to chlorhexidine gluconate.. _Pregnancy and lactation _ The safety of NW Chlorhexidine Gluconate 5%w/v Topical Solution during pregnancy and lactation has not been established but use during these periods is not considered to constitute a hazard. _- Before you start to use it _ For external used only. Use only as directed. Avoid contact with mucous membranes (layer of skin covering lining cavities or internal organs). Should not be used for an extended period of time on large areas of the body. Follow your doctor's instructions about how long to use chlorhexidine. It may cause serious and permanent injury when placed in the eyes, ears, or mouth. 1 PACKAGE INSERT BRAND OR PRODUCT NAME NW Chlorhexidine Gluconate 5%w/v Topical Solution NAME AND STRENGTH OF ACTIVE SUBSTANCE(S) Chlorhexidine gluconate……………5%w/v PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Clear colourless solution PHARMACODYNAMICS Chlorhexidine digluconate is a bisbiguanide antiseptic and disinfectant, which is bactericidal or bacteriostatic against a wide range of gram negative and gram positive vegetative bacteria, yeasts, dermatophyte fungi and lipophilic viruses. PHARMACOKINETICS Due to its cationic nature, chlorhexidine digluconate binds strongly to skin, mucosa and other tissues and is thus very poorly absorbed. INDICATION It is used as antiseptic and disinfectant in: i) Preoperative skin disinfection ii) Wounds or burns RECOMMENDED DOSAGE Preoperative skin disinfection - 1:10 in 70% alcohol Wounds or burns - 1:100 in 70% alcohol CONTRAINDICATION Pregnant and breast-feeding women WARNING AND PRECAUTIONS NW Chlorhexidine Gluconate 5% w/v Solution contains chlorhexidine. Chlorhexidine is known to induce hypersensitivity, including generalized allergic reactions and anaphylactic shock. The prevalence of chlorhexidine hypersensitivity is unknown, but available literature suggests this is likely to be very rare. NW Chlorhexidine Gluconate 5% w/v Solution should not be administered to anyone with a possible history of an allergic reaction to chlorhexidine. For external use only. Avoid contact with brain, meninges and middle ear. If there is contact with these areas, rinse out promptly and thoroughly with water. Keep out of eyes. If chlorhexidine solutions come into contact with eyes, wash out promptly and thoroughly with water. The antimicrobial activity of chlorhexidine may be 2 diminished through incompatibility or through adsorption. Its activity may also be reduced in the presence of organic matter such as blood and pus. Do not use in body cavities. Not for intravenous administration.
