WHAT NORDIPINE IS
USED FOR_____________
NORDIPINE is used to lower high
blood pressure (hypertension).
There are usually no symptoms of
hypertension.
The
only
way
of
knowing
that
you
have
hypertension is to have your blood
pressure
checked
on
a
regular
basis. If high blood pressure is not
treated it can lead to serious health
problems.
NORDIPINE is also used to treat
angina pectoris. Angina is a pain
or
uncomfortable
feeling
in
the
chest, often spreading to the arms
or
neck,
and
sometimes
to
the
shoulders and back. The pain of
angina
is
due
to
a
shortage
of
oxygen to the heart.
NORDIPINE is not for the relief of
a sudden attack of angina. Your
doctor
will
give
you
other
medication to treat this.

HOW NORDIPINE WORKS
NORDIPINE belongs to a group of
medicines called _ calcium channel _
_blockers _or _calcium ion antagonists. _
They work by widening your blood
vessels, making it easier for your
heart to pump blood around the
body and help increase the supply
of blood and oxygen to your heart.
_Calcium channel blockers _do not
change the amount of calcium in
your blood or bones.

DESCRIPTION & COMPOSITION
Nordipine Tablet 5mg
White to off-white, shield shape tablet, marked ‘COV’ on one side
and
scored on the other side.

and
marked ‘10’ with scored line on the other side.
PHARMACEUTICAL FORM/ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION
Tablet/Oral.
PHARMACODYNAMIC
Amlodipine is a calcium ion influx inhibitor (slow channel blocker or
calcium ion antagonist) and inhibits the transmembrane influx of
calcium
ions into the cardiac and vascular smooth muscle.
The mechanism of the antihypertensive action of amlodipine
is due to a
direct
relaxant
effect
on
the
vascular
smooth
muscle.
The
precise
mechanism by which amlodipine relieves angina has not been fully
determined, but amlodipine reduces the total ischemic burden by the
following 2 actions:
- Amlodipine dilates the peripheral arterioles and thus, reduces the
total
peripheral resistance (after load) against which the heart works.
Since
the heart rate remains stable, this unloading of the heart reduces
myocardial energy consumption and oxygen requirements.
- The mechanism of action of amlodipine probably involves dilatation
of
the main
coronary arteries and coronary arterioles, both in normal and
ischemic regions. This dilatation increases myocardial oxygen delivery
in
patients with coronary artery spasm (Prinzmetal's or variant angina)
and
blunts smoking induced coronary vasoconstriction.
In
patients
with
hypertension,
once
daily
dosing
provides
clinically
significant reductions of blood pressure in both the supine and
standing
positions throughout the 24 hours interval. Due to the slow onset of
action, acute hypotension is not a feature of amlodipine
administration.
In patients with angina, once daily administration o
f amlodipine increases
total exercise time, time to angina onset, and time to 1mm ST segment
depression,
and
decreases
both
angina
attack
frequency
and
nitroglycerine tablet consumption.
