Formulation
Gauze, each piece enclosed betw een tw o leaves of parchment in a sealed f oil pack. Each
piece of gauze is impregnat ed w it h 1.5g of a 2% sodium fusidat e ointment .
Pack size: 10 f oil -packed pieces of 10 cm x 10cm
Properties
Sodium fusidat e has a str ong ant ibiot ic ef f ect against common skin inf ec t ions caused by
pathogenic St aphylococci. Local concentrat ions achieved w ith Fucidin® are also eff ect ive
against Streptococci, Corynebact eria, Neisseria and cert ain Clost ridia.
Indications
Ulcer s burns and scalds, or any skin condit ion open to inf ect ion.
Application
Once a day applicat ion, but t he f requency of applicat ion w ill vary w ith t he clinical
circumst ances.
Contraindications
Hypersensit ivity to the act ive subst ance or to any of the excipients.
Special Warnings and Precaution For Use
Bact erial resist ance among St aphylococcus aureus has been report ed to occur w ith the use
of
t opical Fucidin®. As w it h all ant ibiot ics, ext ended or recurrent use of f usidic acid may
increase the risk of developing ant ibiot ic resist ance.
Fucidin® impregnat ed dressing cont ains cet yl alcohol and hydrous lanolin. These excipients
may cau se local skin react ions (e.g. cont act dermat it is). Fucidin® impregnat ed dressing
cont ains butylhydroxytoluene (E321) w hich may cause local skin react ions (e.g. cont act
dermat it is) or irrit at ion to t he eyes and mucous membranes.
When Fucidin® impregnat ed dressing is used on the f ace; care should be taken to avoid the
eyes as the excipient s in t he ointment may cause conjunct ival irrit at ion.
Fucidin® impregnat ed dressing should not be used on severely injured skin.
Interaction w ith Othe r Medicinal Products and Other Forms of Interaction
No int eract ion studies have been performed. Int eract ions w ith syst emically administ ered
medicinal products are considered minimal as t he syst emic absorpt ion of topical Fucidin® is
negligible.
