CLAVULIN DUO FORTE tablets.

questions about CLAVULIN DUO
and CLAVULIN DUO FORTE
tablets.  It does not contain all of the
available information.

WHAT ARE CLAVULIN
DUO AND CLAVULIN
DUO FORTE TABLETS
USED FOR?
CLAVULIN tablets contain two
active ingredients.  One of these is a
penicillin called amoxycillin and the
other is clavulanic acid.
CLAVULIN tablets belong to the
penicillin group of antibiotics.
CLAVULIN tablets are used to treat
a wide range of infections caused by
bacteria.  These infections may affect
the chest (bronchitis or pneumonia),
bladder (cystitis), sinuses (sinusitis),
the ears (otitis media) or the skin.
CLAVULIN tablets work by killing
the bacteria that cause these
infections.  CLAVULIN tablets will
not work against infections caused
by viruses such as colds or the flu.
Your doctor may prescribe
CLAVULIN tablets for another use.
If you want more information ask
your doctor.
There is no evidence that
CLAVULIN tablets are addictive.

PRODUCT INFORMATION 

DESCRIPTION 

CLAVULIN DUO 500/125 and CLAVULIN DUO FORTE tablets
(CLAVULIN TABLETS) are combination 
products containing the semisynthetic antibiotic, amoxycillin (as
the trihydrate) and the  
β-lactamase inhibitor, potassium clavulanate (as the
potassium salt of clavulanic acid). 
Chemically, amoxycillin is D-(-)-α-amino-p-hydroxybenzylpenicillin.
It is susceptible to hydrolysis 
by β-lactamases.  Amoxycillin trihydrate may be represented
structurally as: 

        CAS – 61336-70-7. 

Clavulanic acid is produced by the fermentation
of _Streptomyces clavuligerus_.  It is an 
irreversible inhibitor of many β-lactamase enzymes except type 1
(Richmond).  It is a β-lactam 
compound with only weak antibacterial activity.  Chemically
potassium clavulanate is potassium 
_Z_-(2_R_,5_R_)-3-(ß-hydroxyethylidene) clavam-2-carboxylate, and
may be represented structurally as: 

          CAS – 61177-45-5. 

CLAVULIN DUO FORTE TABLETS also contain the inactive ingredients:
magnesium stearate, sodium 
starch glycollate, silica - colloidal anhydrous and microcrystalline
cellulose.  The tablet coating 
contains titanium dioxide, hypromellose 5 & 15 cps, Macrogol 4000
& Macrogol 6000. 

CLAVULIN DUO 500/125 TABLETS (AUST R 79741) also contain the
inactive ingredients: magnesium 
stearate, sodium starch glycollate, silica - colloidal anhydrous and
microcrystalline cellulose.  The 
tablet coating contains titanium dioxide, hypromellose 15cps,
propylene glycol, ethylcellulose 
and dimethicone 200. 

CLAVULIN DUO 500/125 TABLETS (AUST R 142690) also contain the
inactive ingredients 
magnesium stearate, sodium starch glycollate, silica colloidal
anhydrous and microcrystalline 
cellulose. The tablet coating contains titanium dioxide, hypromellose
5cps, hypromellose 15cps, 
Macrogol 4000, Macrogol 6000 and dimethicone 500.
