WHAT CIPRAM IS USED FOR
Cipram is used to treat depression and to
help prevent recurrent depression. Cipram
is also beneficial in relieving symptoms in
patients prone to panic attacks, and in
patients with obsessive-compulsive
disorder
(OCD) [Persistent, obsessive
thoughts
(obsessions) that lead to
uncontrollable,
repetitive behaviour
(compulsions)].
Your doctor, however, may prescribe
Cipram for another purpose. Ask your
doctor if you have any questions about why
Cipram has been prescribed for you.
HOW CIPRAM WORKS
Cipram contains the active ingredient
citalopram. Cipram belongs to a group of
antidepressants called Selective Serotonin
Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). They are
thought to help by increasing the amount of
serotonin in your brain, which are involved
in controlling mood.
BEFORE YOU USE CIPRAM

_When you must not use it_
•
if you are allergic to citalopram or
any
of the other ingredients of this
medicine (see
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
).
•
if you take other medicines which
belongs to a group called monoamine
oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). MAOIs
include medicines such as phenelzine,
iproniazid, isocarboxazid, nialamide,
tranylcypromine, moclobemide (used
in the treatment of depression) and
linezolid (an antibiotic). The MAO-
inhibitor called selegiline (used in the
treatment of Parkinson's disease) may
be used in combination with
citalopram,
but only at doses of less
than 10 mg per
day.
•
at the same time as taking pimozide.
•
if you are born with or have had an
episode of abnormal heart rhythm
(seen at ECG; an examination to
evaluate how the heart is functioning).

SSRI – ANTIDEPRESSANT
1. NAME OF MEDICINAL PRODUCT
Cipram 20 mg film-coated tablets
2. QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE COMPOSITION
Cipram 20 mg: Each tablet contains 20 mg citalopram (as 24.98 mg
citalopram hydrobromide)

Film-coated tablets.

20 mg: White, oval, scored, film-coated tablets marked “C” and
“N” symmetrically around the
score.

4. CLINICAL PARTICULARS
4.1 THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS
Treatment of depression and prevention of relapse/recurrence.
Panic disorder with or without agoraphobia.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
4.2 POSOLOGY AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION
4.2.1 POSOLOGY
_Depression _
_Adults: _
Citalopram should be administered as a single oral dose of 20 mg
daily.
Dependent on individual patient response, the dose may be increased to
a maximum of 40 mg
daily.
_Duration of treatment _
The antidepressant effect usually sets in after 2 to 4 weeks.
Treatment with antidepressants is
symptomatic and must therefore be continued for an appropriate length
of time, usually up to 6
months after recovery in order to prevent relapse. In patients with
recurrent depression (unipolar)
maintenance therapy may need to be continued for a number of years to
prevent new episodes.
_Panic disorder _
_Adults: _
A single oral dose of 10 mg is recommended for the first week before
increasing the dose to 20
mg daily. Dependent on individual patient response, the dose may be
increased to a maximum of
40 mg daily.
_Duration of treatment _
Maximum effectiveness of citalopram in treating panic disorder is
reached after about 3 months
and the response is maintained during continued treatment.
_OCD _
_Adults: _
An initial dose of 20 mg daily is recommended.
Dependent on individual patient response, the dose may be increased to
a maximum of 40 mg
daily.
