WHAT ALLERYL SYRUP 2MG/5ML IS USED
FOR
Alleryl Syrup 2mg/5ml belongs to a
group
of
medicines
called
antihistamines.
Alleryl
Syrup
2mg/5ml
contains
chlorpheniramine
maleate
which
is
used to treat the following:
•
Symptomatic
treatment
of
perennial
(throughout
the
year)
and
seasonal allergic rhinitis (inflammation
of the membranes inside of the nose),
vasomotor
rhinitis
(non-allergic)
and
allergic
conjunctivitis
(eye
inflammation)
due
to
inhalant
allergens and foods.
•
Symptomatic
treatment
of
skin
itching
associated
with
allergic
reactions and of mild, uncomplicated
symptoms of urticaria (a red raised,
itchy rash on the skin) and angioedema
(swelling of deeper skin tissues).
• May be used in combination with a
decongestant
(Pseudoephedrine)
for
the temporary relief of nasal and sinus
congestion
associated
with
the
common cold and allergic rhinitis.

Alleryl
Syrup
2mg/5ml
works
by
blocking
a
certain natural
substance
(histamine)
that
your
body
makes
during an allergic reaction. Histamine
is
a
chemical
which
causes
the
symptoms of allergies.
BEFORE
YOU
USE
ALLERYL
SYRUP

_-When you must not use it _
Do not use Alleryl Syrup 2mg/5ml if
you are:
•
Allergic
to
Chlorpheniramine
maleate
or
any
ingredients
in
the
product.
•
Intolerant to other antihistamines or
sympathomimetics
such
as
_amphetamines, _
_epinephrine, _
_isoproterenol._
•
Taking drugs for depression known
as
Monoamine
Oxidase
Inhibitors
(MAOIs)
or
been
treated
with
MAOIs within last fourteen days.

COMPOSITION
EACH 5ML OF THE SYRUP CONTAINS:
Chlorpheniramine Maleate 2 mg
_Preservative: _Sodium Benzoate 5 mg
PHARMACODYNAMICS
Chlorpheniramine Maleate is a potent antihistamine (H
1
-
antagonist).
Antihistamine diminish or abolish the actions of histamine in the
body by competitive reversible blockade of histamine H
1
-receptor
sites
on
tissues.
Chlorpheniramine
Maleate
also
has
anticholinergic activity.
Antihistamines prevent the release of histamine, prostaglandins
and
leukotrienes
and
shown
to
prevent
the
migration
of
inflammatory
mediators.
The
actions
of
Chlorpheniramine
Maleate
include
inhibition
of
histamine
on
smooth
muscle,
capillary permeability and reduction of oedema as well as wheal
hypersensitivity reactions due to allergy and anaphylaxis.
PHARMACOKINETICS
Chlorpheniramine Maleate is well absorbed from the gastro-
intestinal tract, following oral administration. The effects develop
within 30 minutes, are maximal within 1 to 2 hours and last 4 to
6 hours. The plasma half-life is estimated to be 12 to 15 hours.
Chlorpheniramine Maleate is metabolised to monodesmethyl
and didesmethyl derivatives. About 22% of an oral dose is
excreted unchanged in the urine.
INDICATIONS
1)
Symptomatic treatment of perennial and seasonal allergic
rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis due to
inhalant allergens and foods.
2)
Symptomatic treatment of pruritus associated with allergic
reactions
and
of
mild,
uncomplicated
allergic
skin
manifestations of urticaria and angioedema.
3)
May
be
used
in
combination
with
a
decongestant
(Pseudoephedrine) for the temporary relief of nasal and
sinus congestion associated with the common cold and
allergic rhinitis.
RECOMMENDED DOSAGE
USUAL PAEDIATRIC DOSE:
1)
Children 2 to 5 years – 1 mg (or 2.5 mL) every four to six hours
[maximum 6
