A
-THEO LA IS USED FOR
AA-Theo LA is a prescription
medication containing the active
ingredient, theophylline. AA-THEO
LA is intended for the relief of
symptoms such as wheezing or
shortness of breath caused by asthma,
bronchitis (swelling of the mucus
membrane in the lungs passage),
emphysema (damage in the air sacs in
the lungs) , and other breathing
problems.
HOW
AA
-THEO LA WORKS
AA-Theo LA is a bronchodilator. It
works by relaxing the smooth
muscles in the airways and lungs to
relieve bronchospasm (sudden
constriction of muscles in the walls of
the airways) and increase flow rates
and vital capacity (maximum amount
of air a person can expel from the
lungs after a maximum inhalation.)
BEFORE YOU USE

- _When you must not use it_
If you are allergic to theophylline
or any content of this product. Or if
you have any of the following
medical condition: Peptic ulcer/
Coronary heart disease. _ _
_Pregnancy and lactation _
Do not take AA-Theo LA if you are
pregnant, trying to get pregnant or
think you may be pregnant.
Do not take AA-Theo LA if you are
breast-feeding. Ask your doctor or
pharmacist for advice before taking
any medicine.
- _Before you start to use it_
Before taking AA-THEO LA your
doctor needs to know:
• Any other medical condition that
you may have including severe
hypoxemia(low level of oxygen
in the blood), hypertension (high
blood pressure),
hyperthyroidism(overactive
thyroid), liver disease, in the
elderly (especially males).;
• Whether you are planning to get
pregnant, are currently pregnant
or are nursing an infant;

BRONCHODILATOR
PHARMACOLOGY: Theophylline relaxes the smooth muscle of the bronchial
airways and pulmonary blood vessels to relieve bronchospasm and
increase
flow rates and vital capacity. I t also produces other actions typical
of the
xanthine derivatives : coronary vasodilatation, diuresis, increase in
gastric
secretion, and cardiac, cerebral, and skeletal muscle stimulation. The
actions
of theophylline may be mediated through inhibition of
phosphodiesterase and
a resultant increase in intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate,
but
the exact mechanism(s) has not been determined. Theophylline is
usually
readily absorbed and distributed into all body compartments. Protein
binding
accounts for some 55 - 65%. The liver is the primary site of
metabolism.
The therapeutic serum concentration of theophylline is accepted as 10
to
20µg/mL (55 - 110µmol/L); levels above 20µg/mL are associated with
toxic
reactions. The pharmacokinetics of theophylline are influenced by a
number
of variables such as : age, disease state, smoking, concomitant
medication.
Therefore the optimum therapeutic maintenance dose should be
determined
by individual titration.

-THEO LA Tablets are sustained-release tablets which produce peak
blood levels between 5 - 8 hours after dosing in adults. Once the
steady state
level has been reached (3 days), the therapeutic blood levels persist
for 12
hours in most adult patients. The mean elimination half-life of
theophylline in
nonsmoking adults is about 8 hours. The degree of fluctuation between
peak
trough theophylline levels can be defined as follows :

INDICATIONS:
AA
-THEO LA (theophylline) tablets are indicated for the
symptomatic treatment of reversible bronchospasm associated with
asthma,
chronic bronchitis, emphysema and related bronchospastic disorders.
