WHAT CHLORPROMAZINE IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR Chlorpromazine 25 mg / 5 ml Solution belongs to a group of medicines called phenothiazine neuroleptics. It works by blocking the effect of a chemical in the brain. Chlorpromazine can be used for: • Schizophrenia in adults and children • Short term treatment of anxiety • Hiccups • Feeling or being sick (where other anti-sickness medicines have not worked) • Autism 2. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU TAKE CHLORPROMAZINE Do not take Chlorpromazine • if you are allergic to chlorpromazine or any of the other ingredients in the product _(listed in Section 6)_. • if you have a low number of blood cells (bone marrow depression) • if you have increased pressure in the eye (glaucoma) • if you are taking a dopaminergic antiparkinsonism drug • if you are breast-feeding • if you are taking citalopram for escitalopram • if you have a history of a low white blood cell count • if you have urine retention due to a prostate disorder. Do not have this medicine if any of the above apply to you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor before taking Chlorpromazine. OBJECT 1 CHLORPROMAZINE 25 MG/5 ML SOLUTION Summary of Product Characteristics Updated 13-Oct-2017 | Pinewood Healthcare 1. Name of the medicinal product Chlorpromazine 25 mg/5 ml Solution. 2. Qualitative and quantitative composition Chlorpromazine solution contains 0.5% w/v Chlorpromazine Hydrochloride (25mg Chlorpromazine Hydrochloride in 5ml). Excipients with known effect For the full list of excipients, see section 6.1. 3. Pharmaceutical form Oral Solution Chlorpromazine solution is a clear orange colour. 4. Clinical particulars 4.1 Therapeutic indications Chlorpromazine is a phenothiazine neuroleptic. It is indicated in the following conditions: - Schizophrenia, other psychoses (especially paranoid) mania and hypomania. - Anxiety, psychomotor agitation, excitement, violent or dangerously impulsive behaviour. Chlorpromazine is used as an adjunct in the short term treatment of these conditions. - Intractable hiccup. - Nausea and vomiting of terminal illness (where other drugs are not available). - Childhood schizophrenia and autism. 4.2 Posology and method of administration Method of administration For oral administration. Initial dosage should be low and gradually increased until the optimal dosage for the patient is achieved. Patients should be under close supervision at the start of treatment until their optimal dosage has been reached. Individual patient dosage varies considerably and the optimum dosage may vary according to the formulation. Posology DOSAGE OF CHLORPROMAZINE IN: Schizophrenia, other psychoses, anxiety, childhood schizophrenia and autism ADULT CHILDREN UNDER 1 YEAR CHILDREN 1-UNDER 6 YEARS CHILDREN 6-12 YEARS ELDERLY OR DEBILITATED PATIENTS Initially 25mg three time a day or 75mg at bedtime increasing the daily amounts of 25mg to an effective maintenance dose. This is usually between 75mg and 300mg daily, but some patients may require up to 1g per day.
