WHAT IS _CIPROBAY 200 MG_ AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
_Ciprobay 200 mg_
is an antibiotic. Ciprofloxacin, the active ingredient of
_Ciprobay 200 mg_
, belongs to
the quinolone group of substances. The main site of action of
quinolones is a bacterial enzyme
(gyrase) which plays a vital role in bacterial metabolism and
reproduction. Blocking this enzyme with
ciprofloxacin (a gyrase inhibitor) has a bactericidal effect on the
disease pathogens (i.e. it kills the
germs).
INDICATIONS
Adults:
For the treatment of infections caused by organisms susceptible to
ciprofloxacin:

Infections
−
of the respiratory tract. Many of the organisms known as “problem
germs” (e.g. Klebsiella,
Enterobacter, Proteus, Pseudomonas, Legionella, Staphylococcus,
_Escherichia coli_
) react very
sensitively to
_Ciprobay_
. Most cases of pneumonia which do not require hospital treatment are
caused by
_Streptococcus pneumoniae_
. In such cases
_Ciprobay 200 mg _
is
NOT
the drug of first
choice.
